That this investigation has taken 2 years is a disgrace. I hold no brief for Cliff Richard, but for someone to have an investigation of that nature hanging over them for a protracted length of time is cruel.

After all the scandals about Orgreave, Hillsborough, and the turning of the blind eye about the mass rape and torture of children in Rotherham; it must be very embarrassing for anyone to admit they work in the front line for SYP - I wouldn't feel proud anyway.

Why wouldn't they?

Orgreave and Hillsborough are incidents that happened before the vast majority of serving officers had even been born and todays officers have a little thing called honesty and integrity and are out there on a daily basis doing there best for victims of crime despite being hampered by red tape originating from the home office and upper echelons.

All the sins of SYP belong to the brass.

£800,000 before the investigation into how they behaved gets underway. What with Hillsborough, Orgreave, Grooming scandal eyc, it won't be long before the entire South Yorkshire Police budget is spent on clearing up its owm misdemeanors.

One does wonder whether there is enough money left for South Yorkshire Police to investigate current crimes in their area. I am fortunate not to live in the South Yorkshire area, but feel sorry for the less fortunate who must be worried about the quality and performance of their Police force.

Obviously the senior people (or person) need to be moved out & retired at SYP. Too many mishaps going all the way back to Hillsborough.

Who has the power to replace these people ? What is the process and how long does it take ? Does the authority to appoint/dismiss/effect change go back into London ?

The more politics or politicians get involved in this, the quicker it will go downhill.

Some of his records might be dodgy, but it is a disgrace how he has been treated. He is an innocent man.

The South Yorkshire police have spent £800,000 of taxpayers money and took two years to make a decision to drop the investigation. An absolutely disgrace.

He may be. He may not be. The CPS state they have insufficient evidence to take further action.

Why are people saying the police bungled the enquirey?

People made complaints about Cliff Richard to the police, the police investigated the complaints and handed their report to the CPS (which they always do) and the CPS have decided there's insufficient evidence to charge him. Maybe the victims wouldn't attend court?

As for the media covering the house search, they already knew about the investigation (not from the police) and threatened to report the story, hindering the police investigation. To stop them reporting the story the police had to agree to them filming the house search...

From the Home Affairs Committee Report...

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201415/cmselect/cmhaff/629/62903.htm

'The force was contacted some weeks ago by a BBC reporter who made it clear he knew of the existence of an investigation. It was clear he [was] in a position to publish it.

The force was reluctant to co-operate but felt that to do otherwise would risk losing any potential evidence, so in the interests of the investigation it was agreed that the reporter would be notified of the date of the house search in return for delaying publication of any of the facts.

Early the following morning, Jonathan Munro, the BBC's Head of Newsgathering, confirmed publicly that South Yorkshire Police had not been the original source of the story.'

Consider 'the media's' role in this.

1. The BBC learn of the impending search of Richards house and threaten to 'go public' unless they a given the inside track. They are then included in the raid.

2. It's obvious from the footage broadcast that they were given inside access and a bit of a witch hunt starts. SYP get criticism and the BBC go all holier than thou about there duty to the public. Basic translation is that they stabbed SYP in the back.

3. Richards is not charged. Not that there is no evidence only that there is not enough to proceed with prosecution. The Media criticise SYP again for pursuing an innocent man.

The Media are undermining many individuals and organisations just for short term gain.

They are not responsible members of the nation and we are all poorer for it.

The Police could have brought forward the search of Cliff Richard's house, conducted it more discreetly and not told the BBC. The whole enquiry seems to have been as a consequence of an allegation about an incident which occurred at a crowded football stadium many years ago. There was obviously no other evidence other than the word of the person making the false allegation, which I don't believe justifies conducting the search of Cliff Richards house in the first place.

Gloria Hunniford summed up the situation very well on the news last night when she told how her friends life and health had suffered as a consequence of the actions of South Yorkshire Police.

Two people. And how do you know the allegations were false?

In that case, we better let everyone out of the jails then and not prosecute anyone. Or keep waiting until the rich and powerful pop their clogs before we air complaints about them.
