I'm using an android phone so maybe that's the difference - if I click the message icon on the browser it sends me straight to the messenger app. If I click the menu and scroll down to messages from there and click it, it just brings up a blank page

I use facebook but do not want to install messenger. There are ways round the problem. Initially you just had to go to the mobile web page rather than use the app, they've blocked this now so all you need to do is go to the desktop site on your mobile. Works fine for me (using Chrome browser nav to http://www.facebook.com which will redirect you to m.facebook.com then check the Request Desktop Site checkbox in the drop down at top right, should reload as http://www.facebook.com). maybe they'll somehow block this eventually but I'm sure there'll be ways round that too.
