Lab or Retriever / German Shepherd cross?

Recommended Posts

We have been looking for a dog for our family, I grew up with German Shepherds while the kids (and me) love the temperament of Retrievers/Labs. Given the health issues and cost of pure bred GSD we have been looking for a GSD cross

Wondering if there any owners out there who have a GSD/ Lab cross and what sort of temperament they have found

The rescue ones we have seen so far all seem to have behaviour issues, typically poorly socialised I suspect - maybe we have to look elsewhere for a good one?

I know a guide dog that is Lab cross GSD and it's an excellent dog.

Keep an eye out on this site they sometimes have lab cross dogs.

I don't think getting a cross breed will totally solve your health issue concerns. You could end up with a dog that has health issues that come from both breeds. I would go for a rescue so you can see the dog grown and feel a bit more confident about health issues. Or if you decide to go for a puppy go to a reputable and ethical breeder(in the case of gsd one that is keen on the straight back for sure after seeing Crufts this year!)

Good luck with your new dog whatever you decide on :-)

I know someone who is rehoming his gsd x collie

I know it's not x lab but the dog has a beautiful temperament

and he's great with kids the reason he is rehomeing him

Is because he just doesn't get on with the resident dogs

I can send you pictures if you need them

That can be a problem with some collies that they don't get on with other dogs .
