Antics Models Closing

Meadowhall is 26 years old, or thereabouts.

Leeds and Manchester have both got bigger and better malls than Meadowhall and yet each has a thriving centre.

Time to give that old tired excuse a rest, methinks :|

its the local people not buying anything more then £1,

It typifies that rather large, formerly thriving, shopping area south of Castle Square, though, don't you think? That the old home of a fairly upmarket department store, and its ancestor, is now a Poundland is a nice short-hand summary of the location.

Having said that, that the old, long-neglected post office building has been so nicely renovated and revitalised is a good sign. Perhaps it'll give the area the youthful, welcoming buzz it needs.

Yes - I'm also pleased to see this beautiful building in our city centre being given a new lease of life. My lovely Mum used to work in that building as a switchboard operator in the 40's and 50's and would be thrilled to see it being restored.

There are so many lovely buildings in Sheffield - if only people would look upwards and above the shop fronts..........

The Luftwaffe claimed a lot in 1940 but there are still a lot of interesting and grand buildings in the City Centre and all over the Sheffield area.

Sheffield is a beautiful city if you take the time to look around

Regards

Bickering removed. I strongly advise that if you have issues with other users you avail yourself of the ignore facility because any more of this and I will be issuing suspensions.

Both of those are much more prosperous and larger than Sheffield so they can support both.

meadowhall is still there and people go and spend there. Sheffield doesnt have that much retail space either as its developed on a linear basis.

And not a betting shop, £ shop or fast food outlet in sight !:)

Nice videos, but you're kidding yourself if you don't believe the poundshop/bookies/arcarde/payday loan shops are a problem.

Just check on Google Maps, down Fitzalan Square and Haymarket alone there are ;

- five betting shops

- three arcardes

- two lots of cheapo fast food outlets

- two payday/quick cash shops (always a great combination with arcardes and bookies, good job SCC!)

- two cheapo crap "food" stores.

And that's within less than a mile. There's a BIG problem there, and with the market being swept away we can only hope that the rest of these scum filled "shops" are swept away as well.

Just think for a moment, independent shop charge a premium and trade from 9-5. What chance does professional people have to go and browse apart from sat? We are left with scrubbers in town meeting Monday to Friday with very little money. Independent shop has no chance in Sheffield. Manchester and Leeds have a lot more well off people then Sheffield

If there is no demand ,there will not be 5 bookies in area. If the scrubbers round there want that type of shop, what else can we sell to those bottom feeders?

also disappointed to find Antics gone, went there last Thursday to do some pre-Christmas shopping and it was gone :( Bought a few bits there over the years but I guess folks/kids arent interested in stuff like this any more

for model trains we do have a few good places in Sheffield (Rails, Olivias, the transport model place on London Rd) but for balsa kits I am less sure

Marcway is a trek for me, but will give them a go. Certainly wont find me in Meadowhall any time soon though

an aside, many years ago I was in Dinnington Working Mens Club when I overheard two old fellas chatting over a pint

man1 "you been to mederall?"

man2 "aye, got t'bus there once when it opened"

man1 "any good?"

man2 "nope, full of poncy shops no one needs and poncy folks no one likes"

It's sad, but it's down to on-line shopping.
