The demise of the Odeon Cinema?

Recommended Posts

I always use the odeon over the other cinemas as it's cheaper (sometimes half the price of cineworld) easier for me to get to by public transport and the biggest bonus, it so much quieter x

Plus the Showroom has a bar adjoining it, so does Cineworld and VUE so the Odeon need to start playing ball and offer something else on premises to be competitive, I say reduce its screens to say 8 then use the space for a bar / restaurant, that'd be a start

There were plans mooted to fill in the gaps on Arundel Gate between the O2 and Odeon with bars and restaurants. This would seem preferable to using space in the Odeon as they could be standalone businesses rather than just serving the Odeon.

The biggest problem with the Odeon is merely its frontage being so far back from the road that it can feel intimidating.

I really couldn't care less about most of the other complaints. As long as the seats aren't too uncomfortable and the screens are maintained. Although admittedly, it seems if you see a movie just before its going to stop showing they seem to use screens where the sound system is blown. :(

As for buying tickets from the concessions, why not? Its only really a problem if its busy and as pointed out, you can always use the machines.

I don't see how The Light is going to kill off Odeon if its not meant to be showing mainstream movies, or at least not as many.

When a city has three cinemas majoring in independent and specialist films and only one "mainstream" cinema. Is the "mainstream" cinema really mainstream?

That maybe so but it is infinently more appealing than going to Cineworld. Its quiet, and much cheaper. I went on a Wednesday a few weeks ago and it was only £5.25 each, and that was for a new film in the evening.

It's cheaper because it's awful.

I've been once and the screen wasn't much larger than my TV, and for that matter the room wasn't much larger than my living room.

So I might as well stay at home where the chairs are large enough for adults and not quite so sticky.

This isnt very nice. The Odeon would have been great when it was first built. You can't attack them for not morphing into a multiplex. Coincidently the first multiplex built in the UK was The Point in Milton Keynes in 1985, which was an Odeon, but is now due to be demolished. It looks very old and tatty compared to the massive Cineworld complexes.

Do we have to pretend that it's a nice experience then? That it's a competitive cinema outlet? Are you worried about hurting it's feelings?

The only bit im sad for is the staff. Am surprised its been going this long. Cant see the city centre having enough for 2 cinemas, but they could rebrand and focus.

Perhaps they'll all be applying for jobs at the light as soon as it's recruiting...

Arundel Gate has never really supported those kind of business though, there's been a few restaurants bars and takeaways come and go but they don't really stay, it's pretty dingy down there so come nightfall you don't get many people wanting to stay.

I think the University took over one of the buildings next to the O2, so it's student accommodation now not retail.

I wouldn't desert the Odeon in favour of anything on the Moor. Not part of the city centre I care to frequent. The Odeon is much more convenient, being just a stone throw from the theatre district.

I imagine that most people will prefer to go to a large, modern cinema, with restaurants and facilities in the same indoor space, than to the grotty old Odeon, isolated on Arundel gate.

Situated next to the biggest campus of the biggest university in Sheffield in terms of number attending, the true definition of "isolation" ;)

But it's not isolated - it's just across the road from the Crucible and Lyceum and there are loads of good places to eat and drink around that area.

I understand why some people do not go to the Odeon now after last night. I parked in the carpark by it and it cost me £19 to park for approx 5 and a half hours. (I was at the Alien/Aliens double bill at the Curzon Cinema).
