TORONTONY Â Â 10 #205 Posted July 1, 2015 That generally chimes with my own experience, Owens88, though I didn't know Brother Victor. Â I don't know your's, or Owen88's era at DLS, mine was 1956 to 1961 and while I did encounter some less than stellar methods of control by the brothers, I never let it get to me, as it obviously did get to a lot of posters on here. I can recall getting 10 on each hand by ALF( Bro. Aphonsus) for copying maths homework, the reason it was excessive was because I kept smiling at him, I have that effect on people. Bladen the Art teacher tried to hit me from behind with a drawing board, put my hand up at the last minute and it went and gave him a nose bleed, he chased me into the stock room and started throwing things at the door which I had bolted shut. He was not a brother however, but was a nutter.Wilf gave me a good hiding once when he caught me smoking, he was the one smiling during that interaction. Other than that , I don't see what all the fuss was about. Teachers in the 50's were generally heavy on discipline at all schools, not just DLS
 Share this content via...
Owens88 Â Â 10 #206 Posted July 1, 2015 I would find it difficult to say that the ones I met were sadists. However I could not gainsay the experience of others as long as they are circumspect. The idea of beating a kid with a gleam in your eye is horrible. But so is the insipient verbal bullying that was also accepted for ages. swift nick   10 #208 Posted July 1, 2015 I was at the school in the 1970s, Tony. I certainly don't disbelieve your experiences. The conduct by staff that you report is abhorrent. I don't defend abuse or abusers but, since most of the teachers I knew at DLS were decent human beings, I do feel justified in speaking up for them.  The ubiquity of physical discipline in earlier days doesn't make it right and it does seem that it was significantly heavier before the 1970s. Browsing other school-related threads on the Sheffield Forum also reveals bad conduct from teachers at various other local secondaries at that time.  I'm sorry you had to contend with such inhumane teachers. Mind you it has been 23 years since the Jays did this. Anyway thanks for posting the link I have already had a peek and recognise a few names from my time there 1956 to 1961, but no one I knew that well so far. I know I am not there, but I was on the now defunct website as a former classmate contacted me 3 years ago and along lost cousin also tracked me down, but luckily nobody I owed money to, found me ..LOL:D
 Share this content via...
dominaingles   10 #211 Posted November 28, 2015 I recently searched the web for info on the De La Salle college, Sheffield. My interest stems from the fact that I am an ex-pat who has been living in Spain for over 30 years, but I was educated at De La Salle in the early 70's under the headship of Bro. Wilfred.  I have read some scathing reports/opinions on education and experiences at DLS from a number of past pupils, quite frankly I have been somewhat surprised. My experience was, to say the least, enjoyable.  My form teacher was "Sid" Lawrence. Anyone remember him? My maths teacher's name is unforgettable......Mr. Octerlunie!  Anyone remember these characters?  I guess I'm near enough my expiry date, myself, so probably these teachers are pushing up daisies, but any info on this period of my youth would be very welcome!.....Ian Grant (Gibraltar & Spain)
 Share this content via...

I remember Wilf catching me smoking in the groundsman's shed. He said " Follow me Mr. Barber", smiling from ear to ear, as we toddled off to his office. Once he had chosen his weapon.,he ordered me to bend over after a few strokes he sent me away with a stern warning , and the ******* was still smiling LOL  ---------- Post added 28-11-2015 at 20:08 ----------  Went there once with the school basketball team. My maths teacher's name is unforgettable......Mr. Octerlunie!  'Sid' taught PE and Biology and was an excellent teacher: very enthusiastic and encouraging. I heard from an old class mate (who had kids there) that Sid later taught at Notre Dame in Sheffield. I liked Auchterlounie but I suppose I was something of a nuisance in his classes and didn't behave as well as I should have. All the same, he remained genial. He attended the same church as my family on Sundays and always said hello.
 Share this content via...
