I am wanting to drill some 10mm holes 5 cms deep in to a brick wall to attach some fence posts.

What kind of drill do I need to buy?

Hammer, impact, combi............

Are cordless ones powerful enough to do it?

Thanks in advance.

An SDS drill is what you may ultimately need to use for this, although depending on how soft the brick is, you could most probably get away with a conventional hammer drill or even just a normal power drill (pretty doubtful on the last one). I'd start off with a smaller pilot hole (5-6mm) before going to 10mm if you're after precision (or using normal drill). Try it and see.

Yeah … the Makita would do the job perfectly!

I was just suggesting a way to save some dosh if it's not the sort of thing you have much use for. :)

A drill is a weird sort of investment if you don't use it a lot, getting a battery-powered drill might seem sensible because of convenience, but my experience with them is that when you don't use them frequently they tend to be without charge whenever you need them because the battery is knackered. So I'd recommend a wired drill. For a wall basically anything qualified as hammer drill should do the job and after that it is personal preference.

Mine (15 years old and not expensive Black & Decker) still does everything I ask of it, the only time it wasn't up to the job was when I wanted to hang up curtains in our first flat that was built of 60s concrete - not only did mine not work, the super-expensive unit the guy that came to do it brought couldn't tackle it either and he ended up having to rent an even more powerful one!

Thanks for that..I will also need it to drill some holes for curtain poles later.

Looking at SDS drills, there is a big variation in price even between the same make....saw this Makita at http://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-hr2470wx-2-3kg-sds-plus-hammer-drill-240v/29604 for £119 and same drill here for £60!

Problem is I need it tomorrow morning, I was using an old wired B&D but it's knackered!

There are 8 at screwfix for les than £70...Titan, Erbauer and Energer!

I'd go for the Makita. There are reasons (not just the name) that it's more expensive.

If you're putting up curtain poles and drilling into the lintel, you could well hit rebar. This is practically impossible to drill through using a masonary drill.

My tip would be to move the hole positioning if this happens.

I picked an SDS drill up at Aldi - £30 or so. For very occasional jobs its sufficient. My mates got all makita stuff, festool etc but he uses it everyday. I can't see the point of forking out for big brand stuff unless you are big DIY man or in the trade.
