F1 2016 Megathread

Recommended Posts

In other news the French GP returns to the calendar in 2018.

Thankfully it wont be at that awful circuit Magny-Cours. It will be hosted at the Circuit Paul Ricard.

That's good news. We always enjoyed Le Castellet and in particular nipping down to the Riviera after the sessions.

It is always good to have more alternatives to silverstone, which gets ever more expensive. It is worth noting that a certain Bernie Ecclestone is the owner of the Paul Ricard circuit....

I'm not sure that is actually true or that we should read anything into it even if it was.

Bernie certainly bought the circuit in 1997 and spent millions on it to bring it up to international standards. It hasn't hosted a grand prix since.

More to the point the circuit was in the name ofThe Bambino Trust which was owned by Bernie's wife who is now no longer his wife. So I'm not sure that Bernie stands to make anything from allocating the race other than what he gets already.

Apparently he does own it still, it is leased out. ! Maybe he will, maybe he wont make anything. It would not make the any difference to his bank account thats for sure.Just seemed like a slight conflict of interests thats all. Personally, the more races in Europe the better, but i just want Imola back.

We would have had Imola back had Monza not agreed a new deal. As Imola had agreed to host the Italian GP from 2018.

Pity they withdrew their legal challenge as they had agreed a deal before Monza did.

Id like to see it comeback as the European GP even if its on alternate years.

That is what i wanted, i dont really like Monza, it bores me but F1 needs that track. Was really hoping Italy would alternate monza and Imola as the European gp will be tied down for quite some time at Baku.

I'm determined to see an f1 race live this year, can anyone recommend which circuit in Europe is best for getting a decent view and cost effective and if anyone knows any good f1 specialist travel companies ?

I really like Germany as a country but having never been to an actual race im a bit wary.

Wish I had gone sooner ....when McLaren used to be good :-(

Been to Silverstone a few times so not really excited by going there and by the time you add on a hotel seems a bit much for a weekend, would rather pay roughly the same and see a totally different racetrack

I'm afraid that I wouldn't recommend any these days. I went to around 2 dozen over the years, mainly in the days when the cars made a great noise, and you could wander the pit lane. Sadly the corporates have taken over and you now pay through the nose for very little.

Watching live isn't like watching TV. Once pit stops commence you lose all track of what is happening.

If I had to pick a circuit it would be Spa, but I've had miserable times there when it rains, and it usually does.

My favourite circuits were Vandvoort, Imola, Estoril, Spa and Ricard. It seems Ricard is back on the gravy train. So I'd probably go there and drive down over the week and find a gite or a villa between there and the coast.

These days I'd rather go to the Endurance races. Everyone should go to LeMans at least once. After the first hour you have no idea what is going on and follow it online, but somehow that racing is incidental.

I've done Spa once & Silverstone for years, Spa is a little bit 'primitive' in my opinion, but we did stay in Antwerp rather than near the track, so the accommodation was nice. Silverstone is a great venue, & we go year after year, & we always stay in the same place, accommodation around there, unless you are happy to camp, is a nightmare to get, as it's booked up so far in advance. I'd definitely recommend Silverstone, & the ticket prices aren't too bad this year :)
