My dog has arthritis

Recommended Posts

Well the xrays are back from the specialist and my dog has hip dysplaisa (I think that's how you spell it) in both legs. So I don't know what I'm going to do know as I don't have insurance for her.

Turmeric and a bioflow magnetic collar have made a great difference to my old staffy with it. She's 13 and still runs around the park after balls! She could hardly move in the evening when I first got her

Are you on Facebook? If you are, there's a fab group called Tumeric user group uk. Ask to join, they have the recipe and lots of tips etc for treating arthritic dogs. Cheap to make up a load of tumeric tablets and your dog will feel a lot better quite quickly ?

Obviously dysplasia is a little different to arthritis but some treatment for it in a similar manner does help.

I give my dog prescribed metacam daily and a cod liver oil tablet and it helps.

He also has hydrotherapy fortnightly, it won't cure anything 'cos unless you have major surgery you can't cure it, but after 3 years of "treatment" his decline is nowhere near as bad as it would have been had it been untreated.

Hydrotherapy for 30 minutes provides more exercise than a really long walk without being load bearing on the hips. This develops the surrounding muscles which in turn support the weak hip joints.

Before hydro my dog had the chest and front of Mike Tyson and his(back) legs of Mo Farah, this was because he dragged his self forward when running instead of pushing. He's now a more uniform shape which does help in keeping his back end in the air.

Walks are better being reduced in distance but increase in frequency, so 3 smaller walks instead of 2 longer ones at each end of the day.

Where did you go for the hydrotherapy and how much was it did you need the ok from your vet before you started.

My vet approved it anyway, surprisingly my insurers wouldn't pay for it as a pro active measure but only if they first paid out £7k for the op which i refused.

I can't imagine any vet not approving it tbh.

I use Kate @SplashyPups, only visit once a fortnight as that seems to keep everything stimulated and bulked up.

We started off weekly to build him up a little and then after about 6 weeks dropped to fortnightly and he's been having that for nearly 3 years.

Personally, I get organic turmeric and smear it in a piece of ham and fold it over and give it to the dog. I also then smear some organic cracked black pepper on a piece of ham as well as it makes it much much more potent. Give it a try :) Organic, cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil is also good. My old dog eats it on its own!
