Recommended Posts

Former Penthouse Girl of the Month ? Sang in a band? Is that the same Helen I've just googled?

The pub was an important part of our social culture in the 60's , but this seems to have died over last 20 years with the demise of the industrial worker , promotion of chemical beer and the breathalyser , then the advent of the liberal lefty brigade who choose the eating and wine as the new culture.

The new generation will not experience our great times in the Derbyshire pubs again .

Hear hear to that

Do you mean Debbie Harry from the group 'Blondie' and she was a 'Playboy Bunny' anyway !

Sorry mate if you do just that I think you'll find that it refers to a 'Sheffield lass'

There's also a reference to a post on this very forum about Jordanthorpe School that will tell you the same.

We were in the Old Hall one night it was about 1am, there was a knock on the back door.

Jack, the landlord said "It'll only be Ernest" so he went into the kitchen opened the back door and let Ernest in.

Turns out that Ernest was the local copper. "Are you having a pint, Ernest" Jack asked.

So the local bobby is sat at the kitchen table having a pint or two!

Reminds me of the "Early Doors" comedy series.

We used to go to the Scotman's Pack for a lock in. I don't know if it was true but I was told on more than one occasion that a chap at the bar was a local JP.

I also recall going to a little place on the Shatton Brough Rd (IIRC) -Is there a place near there called Bretton or am I getting mixed up? I was a small front room, and they brought the beer out in a jug. A car full basically filled the place. We only went two or three times, for the novelty. I don't remember what it was called, but pretty sure it had a normal pub name (Devonshire Arms, maybe). This would be in the late sixties. Does anyone else remember it?

Replying to Dreb 48 , dont think she sang in a band., or was a former Playboy model. I think there is another Helen Caunt listed on Google . We may get muddled between the two.

I don,t know if this qualifies but another favourite haunt of ours was the Royal Oak Coal Aston, the landlord Wally Arrop the clubland comic who was barred from every club in Sheffield due to his over the top antics on stage!.It was heaving at the weekend,Wally always did a performance, disgusting of course but very funny a bit on the lines of Chubby Browns style which wasn,t allowed back then!.:heyhey::nono:

Perhaps not a pub crawl into Derbyshire as per the majority of the posts old tup, but an entertaining experience nevertheless. If I remember rightly, the towels on the bar depicted the 'Relief of Lady Smith' who was shown doing just that and on the same theme, the notice on the Ladies loo was 'Drip Dry' and on the Gents, 'Shake dry'.

]ooh yes I remember those days. The Sir William at Grindleford, Tideswell Inn, The George as mentioned. Not so far out was the Hammer and Pincers, Ringinglow. Fiveways disco (technically not a pub).

Help -I've got a mental block!

Not sure if you don't mean the Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow. This was run by an interesting woman called Lilian Kinder and was famed for late drinking. The Hammer and Pincers was at Bents Green and surrounded by residential housing and in the late 50's/early 60's was run by a rather severe ex-bobby by the name of Charles Barkwith Thompson. I know he ran a tight ship and would be very surprised if he took any risks with his licence. At that time of course in the late 50's, closing time was 10.00 in Yorkshire and we would scarper over the border to take advantage of 10.30 closing.

Just had to join in this thread as it has bought back so many memories.

Like most lads entering their late teens back in the late 60's we seemed to have cash and no problems getting jobs - so quite a few of us had cars - heaven bless the Escort and the Cortina. Usually at the weekend would find us down the Hope Valley - but just cannot for the life of me remember the pubs - but we would stop off at Hathersage, Bamford and either off to Yorkshire bridge and Ladybower, or carry on up the valley to Edale - the Nags Head I remember - where on a summers evening was the strangest mix of customers - hiking and climbing types all bearded smoking funny smelling pipes, or the posers with their flash cars and gorgeous birds - and then us - we just soaked up the atmosphere, and the booze and the lovely looking women!

on a couple of occasions we ventured further afield and ended up in Peak Forest and Sparrowpit - and now I hope someone can help me memory, because I am sure around that area was a pub - a free house - and the bar was jammed with different beer pumps - apparently the landlord kept all the barrels in an old barn or something - parties of blokes from Manchester used to drive up there and start at one end of the bar and see how far they could get before collapsing - a bit like beer festivals today! - I know I am not dreaming but cannot remember the name or exactly where it was

Happy happy times

Back in the 60s my mates plus girl friends frequented Monsal Head Hotel Friday nights visiting the Fluer de Lis on the way out ,Saturday nights it was Lathkildale Hotel to watch Eddie Falcon and his group!.Lathkildale was my favourite of the lot everyone seemed to go there at the weekends,I remember the suave middle aged landlord always trying to chat your girlfriends up!.Sunday nights back again to either one depending on the group playing, the drive back was an experience especially after Bakewell it was like Brands Hatch!.I saw some spectacular accidents on that stretch because even back then there were a few morons behind the wheel who shouldn,t be in charge of a pram, after the drive back it was to Lin Hongs on London Road for chicken curry priced at 5shillings,25p in todays money!.Happy Days took for granted at the time!.

My OH's group used to play Monsal + Lathkildale in the very early 60's, my most vivid memories are of travelling there in the snow and lovely buffet that the Monsal Manager put on for the band, happy days indeed. We often went to Lin Hongs after the gig, thanks for bringing back the good memories.
