Should the UK stop giving out handouts to the unemployed?

after spending the majority of my adult life living and working in south america, africa and bangladesh i thank god for unemploymnt benefit and the much maligned working family tax credit, both these benefits gave my family the breathing space it needed to get back on it's feet. That i believe is what the welfare state was set up to do, to support people in crsisis. I saw first hand and for years the hell of utter poverty. I think what is drving people wild in this country is a section of society for whom receiving benefits has gone way beyond suport in a crisis and has become a preferred way of life. Most peple need support not criticism to break the benefits cycle others. As for thefraud/ scroungers, i think they are despicable leeches and i'm sick of paying tax from my minimum wage to pay for my quite able neighbours holidays etc
