Whispers Bar (Carwood Tavern) c1980s- any memories?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading the Peter Tuffrey book about pub landlords and I stumbled across a short piece about 'Whispers' which was the former Carwood Tavern (more or less opposite the Corner Pin on Carlise St). It had an expensive makeover and was turned in to a video jukebox bar but would appear to have not lasted long. Does anyone remember it?

It used to be the 'Carwood HOTEL', the 'Tavern' in that area was the 'Hallcar' on the Carwood estate.

Peter Tuffrey's book a little masterpiece . Carwood pub building long gone sadly along with the Corner Pin a real steelworkers pub .

I worked behind the bar at the Carwood but I am not sure of the year , the landlord was Richard & his wife was Jean a Scottish lady I'm sure he either used to go in the Timbertop pub or he used to be the landlord. I also used to go in the pub when it want to the Whispers video bar & had a few good nights in their I'm sure the landlord was called John I'm sure he was from Derby & was a night club dj

I DJ'd there back in the Whispers days!

It was run by John & Janet Lomas (yes, from Derby) and 'Spider', whose real name deserts me atm.

I think the downfall was the "Strippers Sundays" that gave it the old school reputation.

Had a good time there tho.

Cheers blues brother. Do you remember why it shut? Was this in 1986?
