dorberman   10 #1 Posted February 28, 2016 whilst on holiday in goa i got a dreaded phone call from my son and daughter stating that our beloved 12 year old doberman was very ill at the vets.she had had some sort of `stroke` with her head to one side and struggling to stand up.she was blind for the last 4 and half years as well as being diabetic but this never got her down and carried on regardless. the vet said he could look after her but said without eating food she would incur serious problems.what he was saying was that the kindest thing to do was to put her to sleep. we are devastated but have loads of fond memories but our house is very quiet now. god bless her xxx
 Share this content via...
SUZIFACE Â Â 10 #2 Posted February 28, 2016 I am so sorry to hear of your saddest of losses, we lost our border collie last month to cancer, Tash meant everything to us, we had to go an get another straight away, we couldn't stand the house without her. Ziggy helps ease the pain, but does not stop us missing Tash every single day, she was such a friend. We still have tears, I know you will too. Give another dog the great home you gave your last one and get and give the love. x
 Share this content via...

angel22 Â Â 10 #7 Posted February 28, 2016 Aww, I'm so sorry for your loss If you're confused then maybe now isn't the right time to get another dog. Take some time to grieve and eventually you'll just know when you're ready to get another dog.
 Share this content via...

medusa   16 #9 Posted February 29, 2016 What a dreadful thing for your son and daughter to have to break to you while you were away! I'm sorry to hear your sad news. Whilst it is sad that you lost your dog, please also be glad that your children have their heads screwed on about when to seek vet attention and carrying through with what has to be done to be humane to the animals. katkin   10 #10 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) whilst on holiday in goa i got a dreaded phone call from my son and daughter stating that our beloved 12 year old doberman was very ill at the vets.she had had some sort of `stroke` with her head to one side and struggling to stand up.she was blind for the last 4 and half years as well as being diabetic but this never got her down and carried on regardless. the vet said he could look after her but said without eating food she would incur serious problems.what he was saying was that the kindest thing to do was to put her to sleep. we are devastated but have loads of fond memories but our house is very quiet now. god bless her xxx  I am so deeply sorry for your loss, made more devastating for you by your not being there with her at the end - not your fault, there is never a right time - but your family were and it sounds as if she had a lot of love and tender care throughout her life and particularly in those latter years. Bek had a good innings for a Dobermann - I've met one that was approaching 15, but mostly I hear 10-12 for our breed.  Sending healing (((hugs))) to you at this sad time...  We had to make the decision to have our first dobe Ailsa PTS in 2011 and I still miss that mad mutt.... we were so distraught at losing her so suddenly (within a week of being diagnosed with lung cancer), that we spent our entire holiday searching the internet for another Dobermann.  After spending 10 years with Ailsa we felt confident enough to consider a rescue dobe and there are a lot of them out there We love all kinds of dogs but always come back to the dobe and I'm glad we did - because we adopted Jesse the doberbeast from FOND (Friends of Northern Dobermanns) and she could not be more different to Ailsa but in a good way - OK, she still has separation anxiety (her first 2 years on this earth were miserable, lonely, unloved), but she is the most loving dog I have ever known - she joins me on the sofa and gives loving snotty doberkisses when I'm having an off day, lol.  She doesn't play (no one showed her how to) but she walks much nicer on the lead and behaves herself when we are in busy places. She stopped trying to eat the cats very quickly and sleeps with a selection of them around her. She can open doors (not always a good thing) and raid the kitchen bin with considerable stealth. She has a thing for apples, oranges, bananas, carrots and celery. She has the typical Dobermann traits (likes to lean on me, sucks on a her blanky, sighs deeply when she is content, has a thing for climbing on top of walls; and many more of those 'does she do..? oh really, mine does that too!' moments)  You will know what to do at the right time - it's OK to compare and to grieve; and if you decide to choose another dobe (pup or rescue), or another breed or mixed breed, that's your choice to make. No one can take away the memory of your beautiful Dobermann.  Love and best wishes from me, Ailsa (my avatar) and Jesse the Doberbeast - who, because she had separation anxiety, (who wouldn't, after spending 2 years in a conservatory all day being ignored, unwanted, un-socialised and un-house trained by her owners), had already been in 2 foster homes and kennels before we found her - 5 years ago. Even when she is being 'that bloo*Y dog' doing dog things that sometimes do your head in, lol, we adore her.  ---------- Post added 29-02-2016 at 13:07 ----------  I wrote this when we lost Ailsa, aka 'Nellie-bear'  AILSA (29/09/01 – 22/08/11) There’s a big empty space at the end of the bed Where a Doberman once used to lay And a worn patch of cloth on the black eiderdown With the stitching beginning to fray  There’s her water bowl, collars and biscuits and treats Her stuffed ‘kitten’ still on the floor And the cats are subdued, treading softly about Because Ailsa is with us no more  And this big empty space at the end of the bed Is so hollow and lonely today There is nothing on earth that could fill up the void Where a Doberman once used to lay.  Sleep tight, Nellie Bear. Yea we got another border, and I think its because Tash was such a great pal, joined in everything I did on a daily basis and I'm sure Ziggy will give us t hat back, yes we see things she does is like Tash reincarnated, but for us that's great. If you love the breed, then go for it, if some of the trademarks of Bek are there, that's nice, take comfort in it. Let me know what you do x
 Share this content via...
dorberman   10 #12 Posted February 29, 2016 Many many thanks for your replies and in some cases your loss too.I`m sorry for you but you have gave me sense of the enjoyment and love our pets give us. The old cliche (time will heal) is so true. I will make a decision on a new pet when i am ready if and when. All take care xxxx
 Share this content via...
