Get a suit, get a job

Recommended Posts

I'm not so much criticising this one, as taking the opportunity of a thread about an ultra-specialised charity to make a passing point about the fact that the number of charities is growing at a rate of knots, to the extent that maybe the UK is busy hollowing out its corporate tax base.

Who said that only commercial types can ever spot and seize a good opportunity first?

You're comparing giving away suits to people who can't afford to buy one.

With selling a commercial device at a premium...

You're the one who's worried that this giving away of suits will somehow stop a legitimate business getting into the market of GIVING THINGS AWAY....

To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever made a business based on giving things away without charge. The closest you could get might be gillete, but they don't give away razor blades, only razor handles (and actually they don't give those away either).

Does anyone know where this charity is based? I can see a link to the launch party in the Winter Gardens but I can't see an address. I would like to donate a suit and some shirts and shoes etc. Seems a fab idea to me.

Microsoft?

Linux was free long ago and yet Windows that you had to pay for was more popular.

As for 'free' windows 10 there is still price.

You are becoming commodity.

Microsoft?

Giving away windows 10 to retail users... Yep. Not quite sure that computer operating systems can be usefully compared to a suit though.

They didn't "base" the business on that though, which was what I said. This is a very new development for a large company, they still sell it to businesses and they still sell lots of other things.

Hmmm... I didn't really mean Windows 10 though...

... I thought back in the 'good old days' of DOS, Microsoft 'gave away' Windows 3.1 etc (as in it was installed for free) on all new computers in order to build up their market share and to get users tied into their products?

Seems to have worked fairly well for them...

Anyway, back to suits... :)

I only mentioned 'hire', and never said anything about a 'premium' :|

The market is 'suit hire', not 'giving things away'.

And I'm not worried, I'm just opining.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever made a business based on giving things away without charge.
So you never heard of loss-leading?

I don't want an argument but will try to answer some questions raised.

This is a one woman band. She is called Vanda and she is very nice.

No matter what people thing "first impressions last" so turning up in decent clothing will have an impact on the interviewer whether the interviewer and interviewee recognise it or not.

The suits are all donated. The "client" (I believe that is the word they use) gets to keep the suit, shirt etc.

It is men only has Vanda does not have the storage capacity for anything more at the moment. She also considered that women can, in some scenarios, wear men's suits but not vicer versa so it means as and when she does go into helping ladies (which she ultimately plans to) she has some coverage, so to speak.

In my view, men are sloppier and less presentable individuals and need more assistance in this department. I am a man before anyone starts.

She is not looking to make any profit from the charity. There is no money involved so that might be tricky anyway.

There were some other things but that was just Sheffield Forum being Sheffield Forum.

I am sorry if I have got any of this wrong. I am only going on what I recall from seeing Vanda presenting at Sheffield Soup. If you don't know about Sheffield Soup, Google it, it's a great event. next one 24th of Feb.

Turned up to an interview for a 26k job in an unbuttoned shirt, jumper, trousers and formal shoes, with my large gym bag by my side.

Got the job comfortably.
