This is the details of one of the three in operation in Hillsborough.

The signage is automated so there is a large clear sign stating you cannot enter the gate between the hours above. The OP appears to have gone through this sign and has been fined.

Bank holidays don't make any difference to traffic regulations like single or double yellow lines, clearways or bus / tram gates and lanes. They either operate 24/7 or at specified times on specific days of the week. All of this is clearly signed.

 

The only thing that changes at bank or public holidays is whether or not you pay in Council operated pay and display parking. Even that is a local concession, there is no legal requirement to offer free parking at all. I was in Newcastle recently and noticed they only offer free parking in Council spaces on Christmas day.

So not only do the signs ignore BH, but the tram gate still operates on a BH, including BHs when the tram itself is not running.

Why would you, or anyone else logically expect these restrictions not to apply at bank holidays? Do any other similar restrictions get suspended at bank holidays, here in the UK, or anywhere else in the world?

 

Do you also think speed limits, one-way streets, double yellow lines, red routes etc etc shouldn't apply at bank holidays?

 

Don't we see enough people saying that drivers are allegedly "confused" by the signing of restrictions already? Why would you want to "confuse" them further?

What's the con? Gates are operational on normal days and signs change to reflect this.

Quite often where on street parking is free on Sundays, it's also free on bank holidays as well (Broomhill and around the Botanical Gardens for example), presumably because someone has decided that road conditions on bank holidays and Sundays are about the same. To apply the same logic to traffic restrictions would seem pretty reasonable to me.
