TV licence thread

Recommended Posts

The Bbc output of tv programmes is very good I think.

the integrity of their journalism , particularly in regard to the coronavirus is pathetic.

If this is your cultural argument for a compulsory television licence fee it is very weak.

There is no moral case for requiring disadvantaged and vulnerable people, especially women, to finance the BBC if they have no interest in its services.

Why keep banging on about this.

Personally I think that £3 a week represents great value, but if you really don’t want to pay or don’t need it,then don’t.

Watch catch up.

Cricket is culturally important to the U.K.

Ipswich MP calls for BBC licence fee to be scrapped

Ipswich MP Tom Hunt has called for the BBC licence fee to be abolished - and for the corporation to lose its role as the UK’s national broadcaster.

https://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/tom-hunt-attacks-bbc-1-6815162

"The Conservative, elected to parliament in the 2019 general election, made his decision following an online poll on his website. Out of nearly 5,000 responses, 97% wanted the licence fee abolished. Nearly 900 people with postcodes in his constituency took part – and 90% of them wanted the licence fee abolished."

A small sample of the population, but very reflective of the mood for change that is sweeping the country. The regressive BBC establishment and it's supporters, so out of touch with ordinary working people, do not recognise this and must be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the progressive twenty-first century.

The snowball is rolling...

Not rolling fast enough.  From the same article.

A BBC spokesman said: “Our analysis of public opinion shows that the licence fee is the most popular way to fund the BBC. Long term polling shows 41% of the public pick the licence fee as the best way to fund the BBC, above advertising (30%) and subscription (26%).

“The licence fee ensures the BBC is an independent, universal broadcaster, committed to serving everyone – not the interests of advertisers or shareholders – and to investing in British creativity.”

Heres a suggestion don't get me wrong I am totally against TV license fees but if you are going to have one then lets make it relevant

Don't know how to work it practically but:

Divide the licence fee by the number of so called "services" the bbc provides and then charge a subscription fee for each of the services you wish to use.

For most people the fee would almost not worth worrying about.

On their own website

  • Nine national TV channels plus regional TV services......................... I only bother with three...
  • Radio stations - 10 pan-UK, six national and 40 local......................... I  only every use 2
  • BBC website...................................................................................................i only use it to check my ping rate so Idon't really need it
  • BBC iPlayer...................................................................................................... i if i miss aprogramme i'll wait for the inevitable repeat
  • BBC Sounds – including radio and podcasts........................................ I don't even know how to use these or care to
  • BBC World Service - TV, radio and online............................................. I certinly o not want to pay for services for other people's benefit
  •
  • Other apps and online services like Bitesize, CBeebies, BBC Three, Food, News, Sport and Weather....   I have no use for apps ...and I'm not watching tv on my computer thats just sillyt....the weather is on the news and they waste half the time telling us what the weather Was like

Anyway there's about 75  here, the license fee is currently £157.50 annually which isapprox  £2.10 a year or 4p a week per service.

How many services do you want?   For me it would 20p a week.

I'd also  like a portion of my money back for all the times I've been subject that programme of falsehoods, omissions, wild and pointless speculation, left wing propoganda, political correctness the list of negativity goes on but they still call it the BBC NEWS.

Well at least you're not trying to spin it as standing up for the oppressed masses, Car Boot could learn a thing or two! ;)

These services give the UK an advantage and a huge amount of soft power throughout the world, are they really only for 'other people's benefit'?

I'd prefer to keep the licence fee (albeit cheaper) and keep the BBC ad -free but this is wrong on so many counts.

I am curious as to why you singling out Vanessa Feltz  on that list?

If your point is that they are all obscenely overpaid then say so but I really don't understand why one person is the focus of your criticism.

Whether or not someone personally likes her, she is an experienced presenter who not only broadcasts daily on their flagship national radio station but also separately presents daily on their largest regional station and on top of that sits in and covers lunchtime shifts when others are on holiday.

That will come with a premium and if I was doing 2 or even 3 gigs each day I would expect to be on more than some of my fellow presenter colleagues too.

To be fair compared to the sum that Chris Evans got for barely doing one show a day or the pay shmuck Steve Wright earns for basically phoning it in using the same 30 year old  jokes and format...... Nessa's pay demand seems like a bit of a bargain.

As with all of these pay revelations that come out every single year in the report the fact remains that BBC pay is in the majority significantly less than any of the other commercial rivals.

No-one is saying that the BBC should or even does try to compete with commercial levels of money but they have to offer at least something meaty to attract and retain Talent.

Now I know lots of us sit there going "I could do that" or "all that money for reading autocue" but the reality is presentation work and attracting an audience is a specialist skill, is hard work often coming with far less longevity and security than most jobs have.  Like it or not that does come with a certain level of renumeration.

As always I'm sure there are plenty who would be delighted if the licence fee was pulled tomorrow.  But just think, with free-to-air television and radio gone what's likely to happen all those Sky, Amazon, Netflix subscription costs one there's a captive audience with no other choice.

With broadcasters solely at the mercy of their advertising Paymasters what do people think is going to happen to any sort of independence alternative opinion or free from influence programmes.

I'm afraid this issue is just a political football. The politicians passed the buck to the BBC, who then said they would have to axe it due to not getting enough dish from the Government.  Newspapers decide much policymaking and decisions anyway as they influence the public, and politicians take great heed of public opinion, twitter polls etc.  Don't be surprised if it's used as a "look this way while I do something over there" - such as big headlines from a crusading newspaper "Government decide to pay the pensioners licence fees" and on page 4 raising taxes on something else or cutting subsidies or something else unpopular gets little press.
