Lead Thieves - watch out!

Recommended Posts

Just a warning: there's a spate of incidents of lead being removed from domestic properties in the last two weeks, the latest being properties on Greenhow Street in Walkley (lead coverings to bay windows). So keep a look out, though the latest thefts occured in the middle of the night.

Police are aware (and are apparently puzzled as lead prices don't appear to that high currently).

Scrap prices are totally on their arse, so lead is one of the few metals worth anything.

Granted it's not worth anything like it was a few years back, but loads more than the sub £50 a tonne you get for scrap iron.

Gotta be desperate to go round stripping it off peoples houses though, people that stupid need to be caught and locked up.

Hi we did a re roof on greenhow street just before Christmas we had a scaffolding on the bay top and they stole half the lead off it, luckily for us we was replacing it with fibreglass.

They might be keeping hold of it until the price goes up again.

Thats even more stupid, there's no indication the price is going to rise anytime in the near future.

Whats more they're purposefully sitting on stolen goods!!!

I do believe proof of identity is needed to trade scrap in now in scrapyards. But as you say how can it be proved it was stolen ? You are also paid by cheque by the scrapyard for the scrap !

Massive fines or prison for the scrap merchants who buy stolen metal is the solution.

Offer the thieves that get caught a caution if they tell the police where they sell their scrap to.

Offer the thieves that get caught a caution if they tell the police where they sell their scrap to.

So you're proposing that the thieves get off with a caution whereas the scrap dealers who may buy in good faith get a big fine or prison.

... You are also paid by cheque by the scrapyard for the scrap !

And the same scrapyard will cash that cheque for you before the ink has dried - for a fee of course.
