Eric Arthur Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 This is incorrect. Some of the spaces will be reserved for university permit holders, but as far as I understand it, the rest will be open to the public. The "public" will be the university staff who don't have a permit which is most of them I'm told. The car park will be good business for the university because they will get their staff's parking money instead of the council. I'll be surprised if it takes a single car off the streets though.

Er, OK, but if this is the case, they will be in fair competition with any of the many NHS staff working nearby who don't have a permit, or any member of the public. Not really sure what your gripe is here...
Eric Arthur Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Not really sure what your gripe is here... I dont have one. The car park is a great idea.

There will be 100 spaces reserved for the Children's Hospital. The University will have 120 dedicated spaces also but there will be approximately 280 public spaces also which are intended to be short stay. The short stay pricing will likely mean it won't be economical to park all day which will discourage non permit holders from using it to park whilst they're at work all day.
bluecanary Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 They are asking the council to make the proposed changes. The council can tell them no if they want. You can apply pressure to your elected officials to make sure that happens if you like. What I would say is that Sheffield University are not a public service, they are a private organisation. They can ask the planning department for permission to do whatever they like, it's the planners who then make a decision. What are the wishes of the residents of west Sheffield, by the way? I live in west Sheffield and don't remember you asking me? I have just heard that preparatory work for these changes is going to start in the Leavygreave road area next week, so might be a bit late for expressing views now. I can only assume that there was some form of consultation at some point?

So the university staff who currently don't have permits don't park on the street somewhere?
Brunette Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 So the university staff who currently don't have permits don't park on the street somewhere? Not usually no, not locally anyway, as the parking restrictions are prohibitive. 2 or hours is no use to NHS or Uni staff. The only times I have parked, it has been in Crooks or Common side and I have walked down. I know a few who do this.

Okay, so given how the new car park will operate, some staff will gain spaces, these staff will be the ones who want to drive (because you have to apply for a permit still), so perhaps they currently drive, but park in Crookes or CS. And a bunch of open to the public, short stay spaces, will be created. Making it easier to park in the area for everyone else.
mrs brady Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Campus plans have just been published http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/campusmasterplan/index

I don't think any staff will gain spaces because the Arts Tower car park is going at the same time.
