Proposed road changes around Sheffield University

So if coming up in the car towards Brook Hill Roundabout from St. Mary's Gate, there is no real change if wanting to either turn left onto Glossop Road (towards the Hallamshire), or turn left at Brook Hill Roundabout (towards the Octagon)?

It's not often nowadays we have to go up that part of the city (generally to the hospitals if anything), so it's handy to be aware of these things when you may not go there for months or years, then suddenly the whole road layout has changed!

I think currently, when getting away from the Hallamshire in the past I would've gone down to Glossop Rd and then up UHS to the roundabout - it seems this will now just be a case of up Clarkson Street and turn right to the roundabout instead now.

Are there currently a lot of buses that come down from Broomhill towards Brook Hill Roundabout that will now be funnelled down Clarkson Street - and is there any realistic likelihood of having buses queueing across and blocking Western Bank in heavy traffic?

Ideally, an overhead walkway well above road level would've been better as it would've reduced the amount of people crossing the road at UHS (and it is arguably one of the worst crossings for pedestrians not paying attention to the road, while transfixed to their phone/music), but knowing what people are like and how lazy they are that they often can't even be bothered to goto the crossing, they'd still try and cross the road there anyway...!

Good to see there is a new car park to be built there, that area is in dire need - just hope it is reasonably priced for the users.

I don't think there would ever be enough buses wanting to turn right into Clarkson Street to block up Weston Bank, but the problem will be the extra phase of the lights to allow this right turn. The knock on effect of this will be less time at green for what will be an increased number of cars coming up Clarkson Street (with the risk of traffic backing up to Glossop Rd and blocking the town-bound traffic on Glossop road) and for those going up Weston Bank (Could they even be backed up to the roundabout?) Although the timings of the lights at the top of Clarkson Street could be adjusted in line with the main traffic flows at the morning and evening rush hours, I doubt that would have a great effect as all ways are still fairly busy.

What utter rubbish.

Nothing has been sat on, especially due to the 'anger' over Jessops Hospital. The university couldn't propose and then implement road and access improvements until their major developments (The Diamond, IC, Jessop West) were completed. Now they are, and the uni can get on with finalising the links between them.

Plus this isn't just for the benefit of students, but of people working in the area as well. If you work at the hospitals, by West Street or any of the other business in the nearby vicinity then the plans will improve pedestrian, cycle, bus and tram access. The car access needs to be modelled but (personally) as long as the impact isn't significantly detrimental, then the plans should be supported.

The uni has also contributed a new (much needed) multi-storey next to the Children's hospital, is proposing to take out a bus lane and re-routing buses onto underused roads to free up some capacity - the turns that are being taken away are only minor.

To me these plans show 'quick wins' to enable the uni facilities to be linked up in a more coherent and accessible way, and traffic taken off roads that they don't need to be on.

Hi Keith (Lilley)

Look at a map. Fulwood Road and Manchester Road, which feed into Western Bank, are the main artery roads into Sheffield from the West.

All traffic from Fulwood, Crosspool, Endcliffe, Ringinglow, Hathersage, Dore and Manchester etc. comes that way.

You can't start choking main artery roads like that without massive consequences for the rest of the road system and the local economy.

Are the University planning to close Abbeydale Road and Ecclesall Road as well then?

It'll be run by the University, so no. And if you only live a few miles away you won't get a permit anyway, even if you could afford one.

They dont feed into Western Bank.

See post #52.

So no traffic from Fulwood, Ringinglow, Hathersage uses Ecclesall Road? Dore traffic wouldn't use Abbeydale Road or Ecclesall Road?

And all traffic from Manchester comes via the Snake rather than over Woodhead or the M62 / M1 - or Castleton.

This is incorrect. Some of the spaces will be reserved for university permit holders, but as far as I understand it, the rest will be open to the public.
