CockneyMafia
Does anyone know what remains of the steel industry in Stocksbridge and how many people it employs? I think Tata steel still have an operation there, but is that it?

CockneyMafia
http://www.stocksbridgehs.co.uk/stocksbridge-works/ Thanks for the link. I've referenced their research quite a lot in the last few weeks. Not sure it answers the question of how many people remain employed in the Stocksbridge Steel industry though? 999tigger
Why not just ring or email them?
geared
Does it not say on the Tata website?? Although recently there's been a big retail/industrial development up there, a bunch of old warehouses got taken down and new ones built for the steelworks (and then shops and stuff built) So you could argue all of those construction guys were (indirectly) employed due to the steelworks. CockneyMafia
Why not just ring or email them? I've pursued this option and await a response. Although - assuming they are prepared to divulge the information - this would give a figure for Tata employees only. Not the Stocksbridge steel industry as a whole. I'm not sure if Tata represents the only steel employer in the area... ---------- Post added 14-01-2016 at 17:38 ---------- Does it not say on the Tata website?? Not exactly. "We employ more than 2,000 people. Our production centres in Sheffield and the West Midlands area of the UK are backed by dedicated service centres in Bolton, UK, Nagpur, India and Suzhou and Xi’an in China." Not sure it answers the question of how many people remain employed in the Stocksbridge Steel industry though? From a high of around 9000 at it's height, 1960's I think - to less than 500 now I believe at the Clanktown (Stocksbridge) works. I ran out of there for 26 years as a HGV driver, and watched it shrink year by year, it's demise done by a thousand cuts. Angel1.
