New Router to be fitted

I am currently having problems with my router- sometimes it goes off completely and needs a tap or two to get the power to it going again> I have checked thoroughly for loose or badly connected cables and this still happens. It seems likely that I shall have to get a new router to replace the one I have. I just wondered whether some kind person out there who is computer literate in these matters will be able to set it up for me. My phone line and socket is downstairs but my computer sits upstairs and is connected by wireless via a dongle.

I am willing to pay reasonable expenses for such help but it will require the person to come over to my home to do it as it will need to be connected to my network ( service provider)

Who is your ISP??

I don't think Sky let you replace the router with anything other than their own unit, not sure if anyone else has a similar policy.

They don't like it, but you can, they can't (legally) stop you....

I have several routers going spare and one could possibly replace what you already have, however it would depend on what ISP you are with.

I have a TalkTalk, Plusnet and Brightbox router spare.

How easy is it to get the login details out of the router now?? it was pretty easy a few years ago when I last did one.

You only need to go the the router address, in most cases its 192.168.1.1 (normally printed on a sticker on the bottom) and so long as you have the log-in name and password (default = admin) you can access settings. If its a like for like replacement then you can save the old router settings to a file and load it back into the new router.

I am ADSL broadband with a company called Demon which I think is now taken over by Vodapone. Your advice is useful but I do not have the competence to connect the router myself especially because my phone connection is downstairs and I use the computer on wireless upstairs. I am really looking towards someone coming to my home to set it all up for me
