Spring Guided Railway Walks

RAILWAY RAMBLES with the PENISTONE LINE PARTNERSHIP

 

 

 

You are invited to ‘take the train for a walk !’

 

Organised by the Penistone Line Partnership (PLP) to encourage use of the train service to visit some of South and West Yorkshire’s finest countryside.

 

Support use of the local train services on the scenic ‘Penistone Line’

 

(Sheffield - Meadowhall - Barnsley - Penistone -Huddersfield).

 

Walks are also held using the Sheffield - Worksop - Retford - Lincoln line and the ‘Brigg Line’

 

(Sheffield - Gainsborough Central - Kirton In Lindsey - Brigg- Cleethorpes).

 

Walks are held on the first, third and fifth Saturdays each month.

 

All are welcome to join in these ‘railway rambles’ – the walks are FREE but train or bus fares apply.

Wear suitable clothing & footwear – bring along a packed lunch & drink.

 

Trains depart from SHEFFIELD and MEADOWHALL stations.

Saturday JANUARY 16th 2016 - Route 66 Elsecar Circular !

 

A winter wander around Wentworth & surrounding area.

 

Start: 9.25am at ELSECAR. Finish: ELSECAR.

 

Distance: 9 miles.

Depart: Sheffield 09.06, Meadowhall 09.16 to ELSECAR.

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday JANUARY 30th 2016 - Locke, Stock & Barnsley !

 

A walk taking in Locke Park, named after a local railway pioneer, Worsbrough & Westwood Country Parks and

 

ex-mining villages like Birdwell & Pilley before woodland.

 

Start: 10.15am at BARNSLEY. Finish: CHAPELTOWN.

 

Distance: 10 miles.

Depart: Sheffield 09.36, Meadowhall 09.42 to BARNSLEY.

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday FEBRUARY 6th 2016 - Along The Blue Loop !

 

An easy walk out along the Tinsley Canal to Meadowhall then return along the ‘Five Weirs Walk’ beside the River Don with much industrial heritage and some wildlife along the way.

 

Start: 10am at SHEFFIELD Supertram stop above Platform 8, at rear of Sheffield station.

 

Finish: MEADOWHALL or SHEFFIELD.

 

Distance: 4 or 8 miles.

Saturday FEBRUARY 20th 2016 - Four Churches & Two Waterways !

 

Discover the pleasant rural lowlands north east of Doncaster, passing historic churches, walking beside navigations and through a wood to finish in Thorne, with it’s two stations - North & South.

 

Start: 10.15am at KIRK SANDALL. Finish: THORNE NORTH or SOUTH.

 

Distance: 8 miles.

Depart: Sheffield 09.24, Meadowhall 09.30, Swinton 09.48, Doncaster 10.07 to KIRK SANDALL.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday MARCH 5th 2016 - From Big Don To Little Don !

 

A walk over a watershed between rivers, between places on what used to be the same railway line but not anymore!

 

Hunshelf is a parish but not a village, the village of the parish is Green Moor.

 

(return buses No.57 Sheffield and ‘SL Link’ to Middlewood Supertram)

 

Start: 09.45am at PENISTONE. Finish: DEEPCAR (bus).

 

Distance: 9 miles.

Saturday MARCH 19th 2016 - I Nether Tire Of This Hamlet !

 

A pleasant walk with lengthening daylight via Skelmanthorpe, Roydhouse, Gryce Hall, Kirkburton, Woodsome Lees, Netherton and finally a section of the Holme Valley Circular Walk to end at Brockholes.

 

Start: 9.40am at DENBY DALE. Finish: BROCKHOLES.

 

Distance: 10 miles.

Saturday APRIL 2nd 2016 - A Silkstone Circular !

 

A route around the Silkstone and Thurgoland boundary.

 

Start: 9.15am at SILKSTONE COMMON . Finish: SILKSTONE COMMON.

 

Distance: 10 miles.

Saturday APRIL 16th 2016 - Chapel, Mill & Nest !

 

An exhilarating route through superb Pennine landscapes via Hartcliff, Royd Moor and Upper Denby.

 

Start: 9.20am at PENISTONE. Finish: DENBY DALE.

 

Distance: 10 miles.

 

Leader: David Cook

 

Depart: Sheffield 08.36, Meadowhall 08.42, Barnsley 09.01 to PENISTONE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday APRIL 30th 2016 - A Second Attempt !

 

A route via Crane Moor Bottom, Rockley Old Wood & Worsbrough village.

 

(at end, catch a bus to Barnsley Interchange)

 

Start: 9.50am at SILKSTONE COMMON. Finish: WORSBROUGH BRIDGE (bus).

 

Distance: 7 miles.

 

Leader: Tony Pogson
