carterb   10 #1 Posted December 26, 2015 Don't worry I'm not planning on joining them  I discovered yesterday that some of my relatives were Scientologists in the 70s/80s and my mother informed me for a long time there was a Church of Scientology just off Abbeydale Road (Near-ish to where the Pizza Hut is now). I don't ever remember seeing such a place, can anyone confirm that there indeed was one there at some time?
 Share this content via...
historybuff   10 #2 Posted December 26, 2015 Don't know about Scientology but I do know that there was a Christian Science church off Abbeydale Road. The church has its origins in Boston USA and the founder was Mary Baker Eddy.
 Share this content via...
hillsbro   27 #3 Posted December 26, 2015 (edited) There is still a Christian Science church near the University and there is a "Christian Science reading room" at the top of Townhead Street. Scientology is a very different kettle of fish, and even further along the road to pure bunkum (to say nothing of fraud and extortion). Here is an old thread. carterb   10 #4 Posted December 26, 2015 Thanks, I have a strong suspicion this is actually what was being referenced, not Scientology
 Share this content via...
hillsbro   27 #5 Posted December 26, 2015 Hi carterb - I just looked in some old Kelly's directories. From the 1950s to the 1970s (when the last directory was published) there was a Christian Science church on the corner of South View Road and Vincent Road, Abbeydale. Earlier directories show the building as Abbeydale Methodist Church. Here is a link to a picturesheffield.com photo.
 Share this content via...
Janet Olsen   10 #6 Posted December 27, 2015 Hi, I used to live on South View Road in the early 60's & can confirm that there was a Christian Science Church at the bottom of South View. Quite an imposing looking building in a red brick colour . I am having a bit of a battle with my memory but something is telling me that there was actually a bad fire at that church but as I say, I am not sure if this is correct.
