Flexo   10 #13 Posted December 16, 2015 HS2 is an expensive white elephant for the few who will leave near a station.  Please support HighSpeedUK instead!  Unlike HS2:  HighSpeedUK's route comes into Sheffield Midland station as usual. Sheffield Victoria station is reopened. Trams are extended to Sheffield Victoria. The former Woodhead route is restored and reopened. No need to wait for HS3!  HighSpeedUK is about taking less than the proposed spend on HS2 and building a new high speed railway along the M1 corridor and upgrading the rest of the UK's rail network! The M1 corridor route can be achieved by lowering the top speed from an extreme 250MPH down just a little to 225MPH which allows for tighter corners.  Instead of creating just one new line, it brings benefits to the whole UK rail network: 40% savings in journey times across the whole rail network. 25% cheaper than HS2! Benefits to far far more people  Sheffield stands to gain much more from HighSpeedUK than it would by being bypassed by HS2.  South Yorkshire route map
 Share this content via...
alchemist   35 #14 Posted December 16, 2015 Its easier to get to all those places from Sheffield Train Station. Rotherham - Bus, Tram/Train, Train Barnsley - Bus & Train Doncaster - Bus & Train Meadowhall - Bus, Tram/Train, Train   Those are precisely the reasons for it being better at Meadowhall, but of course you forgot to mention cars which would NOT be able to get to Sheffield train station better
 Share this content via...
smiggs   10 #15 Posted December 16, 2015 The argument can be made that the same number of new jobs and rates would still exist at Meadowhall. Why would there be more jobs in a crowded city centre than somewere where there is more open space?  No one has made these arguments, Meadowhall was chosen because it was a convenient transit location. No thought has been put into regenerating that area.
 Share this content via...
AmourDesign   10 #16 Posted December 16, 2015 HS2 is an expensive white elephant for the few who will leave near a station.  People said the same thing about the Euro Tunnel & The Olympics.
 Share this content via...
smiggs   10 #17 Posted December 16, 2015 Access to the line for Sheffield commuters may be irksome but access to the business community in South Yorkshire will far outweigh this and provide benefits to the whole population of South Yorkshire.  By putting the station of middle of nowhere? AmourDesign   10 #18 Posted December 16, 2015 Just imagine coming to Sheffield to go to the Lyceum and after having a good night. You have to get a tram, bus or train to Meadowhall at 10.30pm to get the HS2 home.  The heart of the city is so important. Look at Leeds & Manchester. SteelCityAle   10 #19 Posted December 16, 2015 Seems logical that a city centre station would benefit most people, especially if it were the same station as we presently use  For bringing people into Sheffield, better to arrive relatively centrally than travel at the speed of sound to the middle of nowhere then spend half as long again connecting to town  for people travelling to Donny etc better to connect at Sheffield onto non-stop trains than at Meadowhell onto rickety old boneshakers stopping at every lamp-post
 Share this content via...
DnAuK   10 #20 Posted December 16, 2015 Its easier to get to all those places from Sheffield Train Station. Rotherham - Bus, Tram/Train, Train Barnsley - Bus & Train Doncaster - Bus & Train Meadowhall - Bus, Tram/Train, Train  The only thing in Meadowhall is shoppping. Not great if your coming to sheffield for business, shopping, theatre, restaurants, bars, nightclubs etc etc  Exactly how is it 'easier' to get to all those places from Sheffield train station, given that all of those routes go through Meadowhall before they hit their destination? DnAuK   10 #22 Posted December 16, 2015 Just imagine coming to Sheffield to go to the Lyceum and after having a good night. You have to get a tram, bus or train to Meadowhall at 10.30pm to get the HS2 home. The heart of the city is so important. Look at Leeds & Manchester.  At the moment, on a weekend, you can't even get a local stopping service out of Sheffield beyond 10.40 so can't imagine a long distance one getting priority. Besides, HS2 is likely to be hellishly expensive to travel on and largely for business travellers. I think social travellers are more likely to stick to their conventional routes.
