Campaign grows to switch the building of HS2 station to Sheffield city

Recommended Posts

If the HS2 would be coming directly to Midland Station, that would be much better than Victoria or Meadowhall of course - but as there just isn't the space there to do this, it just seems pointless to be looking at a completely new structure linked to a previously failed site at Victoria, when there are already links in place via train and Supertram from Meadowhall to Sheffield and the wider region, so to create the HS2 station there just makes so much more sense... According to the National Rail site, it's only around 7-8 minutes from Meadowhall Station to Sheffield Station currently.

Why can't some or all these business opportunities that the pro-SCC people are claiming be created in the land around Meadowhall and the east of Sheffield - it is still Sheffield! - those saying that the Victoria site can be improved if you look to the possibilities of the future, then why couldn't the same be said of the Meadowhall area? Look at how that has developed over the last 30 years! Rather than burying it's head in the sand like the council and blaming everyone else for the demise of the city centre since the 80s, at least those in charge at Meadowhall, and it's retail park and Centertainment, tried to create for the future.

Are these business users who apparently only exist in the south/west of Sheffield going to be willing to pay the excessive fares that will inevitably follow with these new trains?

Maybe need direct Supertram link, in front of Sheffield Station, to wherever HS2 will call PLUS a cross-platform connection there?

I don't see the logic either as there is perfectly fast tram from Meadowhall. Also it would mean it would bring more investment into Tinsley, Attercliffe and Darnall as well as Rotherham. They are talking of building more houses in that area and there is this new super factory developing in Tinsley. Wouldn't it make more sense to boost that area in any way possible? The Victoria station idea if you look at drawings is some hideous sort of monorail thing hanging over Victoria Quays. Haven't we got enough muddle there? Though in all honesty I don't see point of HS2 at all as modernising the present line would give almost as fast a route without all the upheaval and considerably cheaper as well. Is it worth spending billions on 15 mins faster train journey than a modernised line. Parliamentary committee didn't think so and said a lot of statements were being made about the line with no cold hard facts to back them.

Because the SCC have an obsession that all new businesses can ONLY be in the city centre. So here we are faced with the falsehoods that SCC spread by saying that the station will produce new business in the centre when that is the ONLY place they will allow it to be

It's not quick enough. You can't add that extra 20-25 minutes to the 70 minute Sheff-London, with the changeovers and door-to-door bit at either end.

The whole point of HS2 is to allow places like Sheffield to become commuter towns, to ease the housing crisis in the south east.

If that IS the point of HS2 then we dont want it

If I felt that HS2 would actually help Sheffield to become a commuter town then I would be all in favour of it.

So somehow they are going to magically make the traffic flow in the centre of town vanish, invent a large car park out of thin air and tunnel in and out of the city and build a large station for a mere 700m ??

It is cheaper to build it at Meadowhall, the route would be quicker and there is already a half decent transport interlink with tram, train and car.

The argument can be made that the same number of new jobs and rates would still exist at Meadowhall. Why would there be more jobs in a crowded city centre than somewere where there is more open space?

Sheffield Council would never allow car parking in the city centre. They would insist commuters waste 45 minutes on the bus in order to save 15 minutes on the train.

There are two multistory car parks included in the Victoria plan

Leave it at meadowhall. Better transport links next to the M1 etc. Trying to get to Sheffield town centre is a.nightmares then trying to park near the station another nightmare and after all what is there really in Sheffield city centre a part from flat land and empty buildings?

Just I did hear in ITV news that a debate is going to be today if the station should be in the Meadowhall area or city centre.I wonder who finally will decide to stop this HS2 nonsense. I think it was said in other news last week that Sheffield is one of the most polluted cities in UK and now somebody think to build new station and bring more cars to the centre. Another stupidity with this multi millions project. There are no money for NHS, police, etc in the budget but how much have been spend already for this project?
