gribz   10 #1046 Posted July 17, 2017 Massive, massive waste of time, money and resources. One can but hope the whole pointless, soul destroying project is scrapped by a future government that has some sense.
 Share this content via...
999tigger   10 #1047 Posted July 17, 2017 The government's preferred routes for the HS2 high speed railway north of Birmingham have been confirmed.  The eastern route to Leeds will run east of Sheffield, with some trains going into the city on existing lines.  Just confirmed.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-40635299  So as expected Sheffield really wont get HS2 but Leeds does. Sheffield will just get a few HS2 trains diverted via a link line which will then run at normal speed. The Tories really hate this city.   It would have been much better for the Northern cities to have been linked together properly. LeMaquis   10 #1048 Posted July 17, 2017 Apparently it will go to Meadowhall official announcement Monday.  Or maybe not.  ---------- Post added 17-07-2017 at 17:35 ----------  Confirmed. Sheffield loses its HS2 :-(  Or maybe not.  How is it possible for someone to be 100% wrong when the facts are in front of them? pss60 Â Â 10 #1049 Posted July 17, 2017 Just like brexit, believe it when you see it. With costs set to triple a future government will step in after Manchester is done then the route to Leeds will be via Manchester Why would they make the journey to Leeds an extra 45 miles? The route will be what was mooted last December.
 Share this content via...
Blue Day   10 #1050 Posted July 17, 2017 Why would they make the journey to Leeds an extra 45 miles? The route will be what was mooted last December.  I'm guessing he means the route past Sheffield will be cancelled and the route to Manchester will instead carry on to Leeds.  Won't happen. ez8004   10 #1051 Posted July 17, 2017 Hurray!!!!!!!!!  HS2 goes to the city centre  Roll on the property price premium for nearby properties to the station.
 Share this content via...

One can but hope the whole pointless, soul destroying project is scrapped by a future government that has some sense.  what was a waste of money was the scrapping of the GCR. If that was still running we wouldn't need to build a new route because our existing one was full.
 Share this content via...
Guest busdriver1   #1053 Posted July 17, 2017 Hurray!!!!!!!!! HS2 goes to the city centre  Roll on the property price premium for nearby properties to the station.  Excellent news, come off the mainline near Chesterfield and follow thomas the tank engine to Sheffield, in the meantime the busy trains will have got to Leeds. Own goal or what?
 Share this content via...

It is going to get to a point where once you have spent enough on it, that it will cost more in terms of benefit loss not to complete it. Â This is exactly what happened with the Trident submarines replacement. Billions were already spent before the final parliamentary vote. Too much was already invested in it that they just need to finish it.
 Share this content via...
pss60   10 #1056 Posted July 17, 2017 If the alternative is no HS2 at all, like we are getting now, then yes The whole point of a parkway station is that there's free and plentiful car parking. Drive to Meadowhall and park is much quicker/cheaper for most than drive to Sheffield city centre and not park  ---------- Post added 17-07-2017 at 16:06 ----------   The only problem is that the technology is already now out of date. Maglev ultra-high speed and hyperloop are already being rolled-out in more advanced countries.  It's the same with Hinkley Point - the technology is going to be obsolete by the time it is complete (100% renewables is estimated for 2050)  Maglev and hyperloop aren't getting rolled out. HS2 technology is centuries away from being out of date. What is out of date is the claptrap spouted by antis.
 Share this content via...
