Old ceiling replacement - how much mess?

Recommended Posts

I probably need a new landing ceiling after Christmas. The old one is from the 1920's and lath and plaster. My question is does sealing up all the doors with tape etc.. really stop the dust from getting everywhere? The hall, stairs and landing need decorating but not the whole house.

Thanks

Whe we had ours done the lath and plaster was sound so it was easier and cleaner to plaster board over it and skim.

It was stil necessary to remove the old coving and replace with new.

Yes, we've just finished a staircase where we pulled down the ceilings and replaced a stud wall.

All carpets kept clean and doors taped up, it is messy but with the correct preparation the dust can be controlled.

As RJRB said, you can avoid mess by boarding over what's there. The plaster dust is not even the worst - the loft dust can be much nastier.

Another top tip is to cover/seal-off everything. I only discovered the dust behind a radiator after having a carpet fitted :(.

Another tip . Go in false roof clear of all the soot dust rubish on top of ceiling coming down. Steady as you go you need hand brush small shovel bucket. :hihi::hihi:

Thanks all - that's reassuring advice and helpful tips.

I'll look to get it quoted for and then booked in in the new year.
