Turko-Russian powder-keg

Eh?....The only context needed is that Putin is actually right about oil...Be it illicit or government sanctioned is passing through Turkey....They could easily stop it, so why haven't they?

Just to add : http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/19/-sp-islamic-state-oil-empire-iraq-isis

Context as in proportion.

If its 50% plus and sanctioned by the Turkish government then he has a point.

If its a few % and a few black market tankers, then he's overegging it.

Its not easy to put a stop to black market activity and smugglers. Iy would be easy if it was an official government pipeline.

Well a similar question is 'Where do you think it's going?'

Given they don't have an advanced or sophisticated transportation system, and no access to a port for ships, then there's only so many places it can actually go.

Into Iraq, into Turkey or into Syria.

IS is at war with all of them, but still managing to sell them millions of barrels of oil at the same time.

It would seem a lot of the oil is being sold within Syria to all factions and to factions in Iraq. Its going by entrepeneurs and middlelmen who keep selling it on until it reaches its destination.

Well they're obviously selling millions of barrels of it to someone, and there aren't too many suspects, lets face it!

In response to Tigger999...You only have to look in google and there's dozens of examples of Iraqi and Syrian oil being smuggled into Turkey, to which they turn a blind eye. So it's not in my vivid imagination or Putins.

Good article and it addresses a lot of pertinent questions. Its still no clear how much of that trade is going via Turkey and how much remains in Syria.

The Financial Times has done some interesting analysis of how the ISIS oil network operates.

JFK or Loob you might find it a worthwhile read.

I'm guessing that the oil gets sold on a few times, until it's impossible to work out where it originates from, and then it'll gets processed.

Based on what? How much of ISIS oil output is Turkey buying? What are you basing your claims on?

It's not exactly rocket science. There are regular convoys of around 500 tankers taking oil across the border into Turkey. It's pretty hard to keep secret as it stands out rather more than a couple of hundred fags in your suitcase.

Much of this agro kicked off a couple of weeks ago when the Russians took out the convoy on its way to the border crossing.

Interesting...I thought for a very long time now, how difficult is it to obliterate an oil field? The Iraqi's did it very successfully during their flee from Kuwait...Yes the Americans and now the Russians and of course the French are bombing them, but seemingly unable to hit their prime source of revenue..Oil...I just wonder why!

Maybe nobody wants to destroy the oil fields, they might want access to them when the conflict is over!

They rebuilt the ones destroyed in Kuwait...

it seems you can't have your cake and eat it...if they truly want to destroy (so called) IS, then take away their earning power...OIL

This one isnt bad on the smuggling routes for the oil that leaves Iraq/Syria. Certainlt gives me more of an idea how it all works and how complex it is. I had always wondered how the oil went and it seems to be the smugglers/ entrepeneurs.

Jfk I was reading that thing yesterday about Nuclear bombs and the development thereof. I noted your comment on Klaus Fuchs, so read up on him, was interesting how the Russians developed theirs with his help.

Perhaps we have a possible solution for now we can all agree on? Take out the tankers. Every day. Do not let them get the oil sold at all. Cut off their main funding and see what happens next.

As Pete put earlier, how easy would it be for us (meaning the West/allies) to take out the oil fields?

Did you read much about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and their ultimate fate? Klaus Fuchs certainly got very lucky when you look at what happened to them.
