*_ash_*   88 #13 Posted November 18, 2015 One of the unit would make a really nice bar. Similar to 'The Tramshed' with the exposed brickwork etc. Wish i had £50,000 to spare  Certainly seems like being worth a punt IF the units get taken up with new places. There is a bit of free land too as some opportunity.  The Shakespear is quite popular, but I think an addition will work in favour. It makes it worthwhile going out somewhere when there are a few places to go in. Kelham Island is a good example of that. (and pub wise, to a certain extent similar to Heeley with the Brothers as well as Sheaf to go in).
 Share this content via...
tzijlstra   11 #14 Posted November 18, 2015 I hope it picks up, it is near the Castle redevelopment as well so I'd expect it to. It is the ideal connection between Kelham Island and the city so there is scope - it takes that first investment though. The Shakey alone isn't quite enough. Also think it needs a pedestrian bridge over the ring road there.
 Share this content via...

AndrewC   307 #17 Posted November 18, 2015 Sounds nice and cosy !!!!!  Don't worry, they don't just stack them up, cut a door in the bottom one and leave you to it It's quite the growing-in-popularity eco-friendly construction material. Usually still used in quite a functional, un-cosy way it's now starting to be used with more style and a lot more insulation to overcome a lot of the problems with using them. Before too long you'll probably not be able to easily tell a shipping container structure from any other steel frame structure.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_container_architecture  Here's what the Shalesmoor development will look like. Still fairly boxy looking but very workable space.  http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=126058419&postcount=
 Share this content via...

999tigger   10 #20 Posted November 18, 2015 Whens the last time you can remember this area flourishing. I cant recall it ever being a success as its stranded between too much traffic. Cany imagine development of the Castle area having any effect at all.
 Share this content via...
Jonny5 Â Â 10 #21 Posted November 18, 2015 I can see this working. It could even be pedestrianised between Furnace and the dual carriageway. Â It's too far from the Castle to benefit from that though and besides the Castle scheme is stuck in SCC hell.
 Share this content via...

Cany imagine development of the Castle area having any effect at all. Â You could say the same about almost all of Kelham Island [into Millsands], and that's doing ok. Â There are plenty of new[ish] flats around this side of the ringroad, and plenty of space for more, or conversions. Â I took a look earlier when I went past. I think I could see that as worth a risk if you have enough to get started, and the other prospective tenants look like they will bring people in. smullen   10 #24 Posted October 18, 2016 It wouldn't surprise me if this stretch of road did well in the next few years.  I wonder if a small micro-pub might fair well, it's quite close to many flats/kelham island and the law areas.  Funnily enough, I hear a micro-pub opening on Gibraltar Street is on the cards - should make a nice addition to the Kelham Island/West Bar area!
