Went there yesterday and noticed they were on but never heard anything about the switch on

 

Was the usual event, combined with a concert in the car park hosted by Capital radio.

Crystal Peaks shopping centre have the Chuckle Brothers switching their lights on this Thursday, 12th November.

This topic is raised every year on Sheffield Forum, why anyone bothers about Sheffield's

Christmas Lights beats me.......they are rubbish and nothing to get excited about !

 

If I've said this once on here when the subject has been raised year after year, I must have said it a thousand times before: Sheffield's Christmas lights way back in the 60's and into the very early 70's use to be something to go and see - not quite as good as Blackpool's illuminations, but not far behind.

 

From the bottom of the Moor right up to Castle Gate, there was a multitude of lights on both sides and different types of lights....not just a string of coloured bulbs with the odd one or two bulbs !

 

Go to any other city and look at their displays then come back to Sheffield and do a comparison......complete and utter rubbish, although I don't overboard with putting Christmas lights up in my garden, I just put up a rope light and a set of twinkling lights and that looks better than the City Centre lights.

Usually we have some Z list X factor reject turning on the Christmas lights. Can't the council ask John the pram man to do it? He is a real legend loved by all and would be a better choice.

He'll be appearing alongside other famous faces including girl band Stooshe, singer/songwriter Lucy Spraggan, children’s characters, and those appearing in this year’s Sheffield Theatres Christmas pantomime - including Alex Winters from CBeebies, Coronation Street actor Chris Gascoyne and Damian Williams.

We'd also like to say a genuine thank you to everyone who took the time to get in touch and say how much they'd like to see Mr Burkhill up on stage. He's told us he's "honoured" to have been asked and can't wait to meet you all on Sunday.

Note Leopold Street will be closed on Sunday for the event so buses that normally serve the Peace Gardens/Town Hall area will be diverted.

Christmas lights switch-on

 

Real Christmas returns to Sheffield this year as the Christmas Lights switch-on takes place across the city centre on Sunday 22 November from 2pm to 6.30pm.

 

This year's event will evoke those nostalgic memories of childhood, with choirs, Santa's Grotto, carolling, pantomime, street entertainment, Christmas markets, children's TV and film characters, Christmas craft activities, fairground rides and a fairground organ.

 

The illuminations will be switched on at 5:30pm from the Peace Garden's stage.

 

Heart Yorkshire presenters will host the stage programme with choirs, Christmas music, pop opera, interviews and Sheffield Theatre's pantomime stars. This year, pop band Stooshe and Sheffield's own Lucy Spraggan will be helping the festivities as our special headline switch-on guests.

 

Bring the family along to meet children's film and TV characters, have a go at Christmas crafts in the Winter Garden and even meet Father Christmas in his grotto on Fargate.

 

You can take the elf trail from the Winter Garden, searching for clues around the city centre and you might even win a prize in the draw.

 

You can also take a ride on a fire engine and play on the National Emergency Museum's display of emergency vehicles as the museum goes on tour for the day.

The Moor Christmas Party

 

For younger children, The Moor will be hosting their annual Christmas party from 12.30pm to 4.30pm with the switch on of The Moor lights from the tree near Atkinsons at 4.00pm.

 

Look out for Granny Tourismo, Musical Ruth and the living nativity. There will also be mince pie and balloon giveaways, Father Christmas, real reindeer, street dance and children's rides to enjoy.

 

Christmas Market and Sleigh Bar

 

A truly magical experience awaits you on Fargate with the arrival of the Sheffield Christmas Market. Traditional wooden cabins offering a huge choice of seasonal goodies makes this the perfect place to stock up on gifts, food and treats!

 

Over 40 hand picked market traders from all over the UK and Europe will arrive on Friday 13 November, offering shoppers the chance to browse hundreds of unique products including handmade crafts and international foods.

 

The Sleigh Bar returns to the top of Fargate, providing a chance for you to end your Christmas shopping with a well-earned glass of mulled wine.

Yes I agree he is a star man but even an Owl like me says that John is far more of a star. Hes raised thousands for Macmillan. He is a true hero.
