North South economic divide increasing

Recommended Posts

The gap between cities and towns in the south and the rest of the UK has widened over the past 10 years, according to a Centre for Cities analysis of Britain’s 64 largest cities and towns which draws on a decade of official data, despite stated efforts by the last two governments to bridge the north-south divide and rebalance the economy.

The Cities Outlook report finds cities in the south are out-performing those in the rest of the country in terms of population growth and in the number of jobs and businesses created.

Britain's fastest growing cities are all in the south – and its shrinking ones all in the north

I also came cross this http://www.cityam.com/207396/six-cities-grew-faster-london-last-decade

5 out of the 6 which grew faster than London were London satellite cities, and the the one which wasn't, was Aberdeen.

Many people hold the view that the political classes have abandoned Northern England but the amount of money pumped into regeneration projects in the north, refutes this.

My theory for the lack of northern growth is that companies prefer to be based in and around London. Also people who can afford to will generally choose to live in the South. Are there any solutions to this problem or do you think the North South divide will continue for years to come?

Living in overpopulated areas doesn't make people happy, it makes them less happy than those people living in areas with lower population densities.

From someone who spent 30 odd years growing up and living in London, I can tell you I prefer the North.

When I do return to the South (London) to see family or on business, I find I am more stressed!

Give me the North any time of the day...and earning a decent salary helps of course الحَمْد لله

I'm not sure it's a clear cut north south thing. There are places in the south seeing low jobs growth eg Gloucester but Nottingham and Newcastle are in the top 10. Equally Warrington, York, Wigan and Middlesborough seem to come out well in the stats like businesses, employment rate, private sector jobs etc. Southampton seems to come out quite poorly, which surprised me.

Obviously there are places which in my opinion are in terminal decline like Hull.

That doesn't surprise me.

It is an uncomfortable conclusion from happiness research data perhaps - but multicultural communities tend to be less trusting and less happy.

28% of people in London are in poverty, seven percentage points higher than the rest of England.

A more telling statistic would be the comparison between Labour/Conservative councils.

Why?

Does the Council have that big an effect on your financial well being?

Arent the councils going to fall in line with economic prosperity?

Waht's your point?

People in the north will continue to vote Labour, people in the south will continue to vote Conservative, the divide will grow ever wider.

If there is a link it would raise questions over how Labour run their councils and attract businesses.

Especially if there was no significant upturn in the performance of Labour councils when there was a Labour government.

You are assuming a Council has such a significant impact on the prosperity of a local area or that local areas started on an equal footing.

You don't think that they do?

People who vote labour need a reality check. Labour are the party of economic stagnation, unemployment, self entitlement and Muslim haters.
