Have the new trams arrived yet?

Recommended Posts

True; so it's a shame that EU rules preclude preference to UK manufacturers (e.g. Bombardier in Derby, as per post #41).

And whatever happened to Metro-Cammell, maker of London Underground units?

A good example of why UKIP was created and is 100% financially backed by British business that cannot compete with competition from abroad.

And how it relies on untruths to whip up support a section of the electorate that it would exploit.

Even a basic review of British train and tram building would show that it has always been an international business bringing together different manufacturers to create its final product. This is even truer today with many thousands of individuals and hundreds of companies creating rail related products for export and home use.

After dieselization in the 1960s and electrification of the busiest routes successive governments were appalled by the losses made by BR (mainly in the SE). The UK rail industry collapsed due to the inability of HMG to finance a steady flow of orders throughout the 70' and 80's to the extent that Indian engineers built the Selby diversion and Romanian locos were bought as there was no capacity in the UK. Lack of work led to lack of investment and the inability of UK owned businesses to meet modern standards, inability to compete and some closures.

However foreign companies have invested in a UK based train and tram business and successfully compete globally for contracts. The British consumer

pays less for better products because of the tendering procedure required by the EU - the same laws that UKIP backers would scrap to protect their self interest. The British worker at Bombardier, Hitachi etc. cares not that the profits go Canada, Japan etc.

The build up of the UK rail business is still hindered by the failure of HMG to set about a regular home demand. The activities of the financial backers of UKIP to prevent competition, prevent inward investment, prevent job creation and to close British and foreign owned business in the UK is appalling.

When the steam loco "Tornado" was built recently in Darlington more than half of the suppliers were from the Sheffield region. One off jobs do not sustain a business- don't let the financial backers of UKIP block their trade.

Ironically the Tram Train will be supplied by a company owned by a country desperate to join the EU but cannot because of their constitution - Switzerland.

Is this the route that the new TramTrain will take from Rotherham to Sheffield?

The tramtrain will switch to the tramtracks near meadowhall south but will probably take longer than the route the train on the recording takes.

Edit, that is faster than I wait for my so called superbus to Sheffield.

Yes that's the tram train route except they will switch to the Supertram network at Tinsley by the M1 viaduct

Think they are a good idea. Wish they went up eccy road

Imagine the delays if they went up Eccy Road. They struggle keeping to time using West Street and others....

Quite - modern tram systems work best when the majority of the route is on dedicated railway lines with street running just used to access City Centres and quiet suburban termini - otherwise the trams just get stuck in the same traffic jams as everyone else.

With tram-train the idea is to utilise railway lines that are already in place but don't see much traffic. Sheffield now has quite a number of freight lines that fit such a description with some of them having seen new developments surrounding them such as new business parks and housing estates.

Areas such as Waverley, Stocksbridge and Killamarsh could be candidates...

The main line out to Dore could also have potential if you built tram lines alongside the main line - the main line is too busy really for tram-train. They would however have to cut over from the railway to the street somewhere in the Millhouses area unless the terminus was to be Dore station. The benefit of going on street for the last bit however is trams could continue up to Totley or Totley Brook.

The new tram/train did a depot to arena gauging run last night. It appears to have acquired local fleet numbers 201 since it arrived. The railway number is still on the front
