Sheffield Bus Changes

The bus changes are so devastating for me that I'm going to give notice at work tomorrow. What used to be a 40 minute trip has turned into an hour and 15 minutes with a walk that causes me problems due to a bad leg. The stop outside my house isn't even in use anymore. It's like Beaching and the railway cuts all over again. This is just making me more determined to move to Leeds.

The 85 still exists in a revised form: High Green-Hillsborough-City-Abbeydale Road-Hutcliffe Wood-Chancet Wood .

Ah, the old Volvo B10BLE single deckers... I suspect as they were still parked up at the Sheffield depot they were sent out to try and recover service with everything running late.

Yesterday was a shambles. If frequencies are reduced from every 12 mins to half and hour (the new 86 -old 87) AND you stop putting double deckers at peak time, of course you'll end up full about 3 stops in. Reducing the bus seating capacity is fine on routes/stretches with high frequency as you can indeed get whatever bus is needed, but for routes where it's the only bus for significant stretches to go that way.

I understand a route has to be financially viable, however when you take away the opportunity for it to be (in this case dropping the service to once hourly from 6pm) it will just end up being lost later.

For me, I can no longer get this bus home from work, or avoid town (previously I could get the 85 from eccy rd down to abbeydale road, and get on an 87) Now, before you come back and say I can still do that... I am fully aware that I can do that, HOWEVER given the notoriety of the 85 not being on time, I cannot risk missing the connection, as previously, I'd be waiting 15 mins if I was really unlucky and traffic was bad on London Road. Now, if I were to miss the bus, potentially I'm waiting 55. Also, I can't stop off into Sainsbury's on my way back, because I'll be waiting for too long, assuming that the next bus arrives on time/at all.

 

As for the decisions made on the routing of the 24/25...don't get me started!

 

My two bus journey to work is now three buses realistically given yesterdays palava. My journey time home increased by half an hour by being forced into and out of town.

 

And before anyone asks why I don't walk to London Road from Ecclesall road, I am unable to due to disability.

 

I'm a great supporter of public transport, but when the system works. I've been to and lived in other places in the UK where it's the same providers (so no casting blame on the providers here) where the service just works. Generally covers a wider geographic area as well! Recently I was in Denmark (I'm not sure if it's nationalised public transport or not, but it's CERTAINLY integrated)

 

It's really difficult to have written this moan, because I really wanted to support the changes. Ultimately though, the changes have been made to the wrong routes in the wrong places.... and if you want to comment asking if you think I could do better? Actually, YES I do... and I'd be willing to prove it given then chance.

Where on Eccy Road are you travelling from? Hunters Bar also has the 4A, 6, 10/10A and 505 running down to Abbeydale Road as well as the 82.

Andy C- not hunters bar! Fully aware of the buses that run. I am not going to list the issues with each particular bus, as to be honest I know how to use the timetables!

This is the first issue encountered, but given.i commute four times a week.its a big.one. I'm hopeful that journey times will reduce once the services have had a few days to adjust because 90minutes to travel 6miles is frankly unacceptable.

All we have left in S4 is the 35 once an hour. There's been a sign on the bus stop saying there were changes coming but that's all I've seen.

I've looked at the timetable online but it doesn't include every stop so I have to look when it leaves Meadowhall and when it gets to Margate Drive and guess.

My husband and many neighbours are giving up and walking further for the x78 but I can just walk to the 35 stop as it is.

The service for Grimesthorpe, Wincobank have been unreliable for a long time. It's isolating and makes remaining independent harder.

There did seem to be a lot of people flapping about yesterday not knowing what to do or where to go.

 

It didn't help things that some the live departure boards (on Arundel Gate) were just completely wrong!

 

The timetable changes have added approx 45 minutes to my already annoying public transport commute per day (3 hours 45 minutes per week), once my ticket runs out I'm probably going to start driving into town instead which should gain me a couple of hours per week rather than losing another 3.75!

totally understand people, including me, have questions to ask...thats why i will be setting off for earlier bus in the morning for a few days...but when you get pillocks like the woman on a stagecoach bus today arguing with driver about a first bus route it really wound me up...she just woudnt be told he didnt know first bus routes

 

So do I,but when the conversation then starts going down the road of "I'll tell you why the confusion was...Sheila was telling me blah...blah...blah,and I said blah...blah...blah."

If I had know about the changes,I might have added a little bit more time in my journey for it,but I didn't know anything about them til that morning (not blaming the transport companies for that,because it was my first bus in about 5 years)
