Dying hamster advice needed

Hello

 

Our Gordon (Syrian) started losing his fur about a month ago, he's hardly eating and I'm putting water to his mouth to keep him drinking, he sleeps nearly all the time - he looks like a fat bald rat! I need him putting to sleep poor thing but my vets said they'll inject him directly into his heart, I can't do it - does anyone know a vet who could gas him first ? My husbands laughing at me but I don't want Gordon's last few seconds to be in any way painful! He is very much loved, I have gradually removed all his tubes and toys as he is barely walking - and he has safe bedding in, to keep him comfortable, and looking online it's either old age or cushings disease (he's 3), and people suggest feeding him soft foods : scrambled egg, damp bread, baby food / which I have been doing but he's eating very little. I want an end to his suffering - but a gentle end - I don't know what to do

Ah poor Gordon, I know exactly how you feel having had small animals PTS this way in the past has absolutely broke my heart.

I can't bear it either, and I see absolutely no reason at all why your vet can't send him to sleep with a whiff of gas first, in fact its a really good idea, obviously it will cost more and take longer but this is one thing that needs doing just right for you and your pet...those sort of regrets are truly terrible.

 

If your vet wont do it find one that will, its not to much to ask surely. I hope that it all goes as smoothly and well as it can xx

Ring around other vets and inquire how they do it . I always thought it was with gas not injection .

I only ever use Hall Court at Dinnington and the lady I spoke to said "it's an injection straight into the heart" for small animals. She didn't give me any other option - I can't go to the one at Killamarsh ever again but that's a whole different story- does anyone know any specialist rodent vets or vets who would listen to my concerns x

I know its a distance away, but Peak vets Olivet road Woodseats have been amazing with my daughter's rats when their lives are coming to an end. The last one being last saturday. Each of the vets we have seen have been gentle with rat and extremely compassionate with her.They have ALL been 'gassed down' first albeit out of the room. I have witnessed injection into chest cavity and never want to again. As a final nice touch a sympathy card arrives in the post. Spencer is referred to as 'he' as was Patrick although they were both girls lol! Hanna fared better as I expect Aria will when the time comes.[PLL fans will recognise some names]

Springfield vets give them the gas first before the needle, they did this for 2 of my hamsters, one of which had Cushings and had all the same symptoms as yours.

 

I cannot understand any vet that wouldn't do this, it's what is best for the animal and surely that's what being a vet is all about!!

 

The whole experience of losing an animal is so devastating you really need to know it's been done in the kindest possible way and I understand 100% how you feel about this.

 

I hope your little hammy has/had a peaceful end bless him!!

The lady vet at peaks was lovely, and Gordon had a pain free end - which is the best I could do for him xx
