Any telephone engineers out there?

am trying to fault find my landline.

have 2 phones, both have dial tone, both can receive and make calls but neither rings to alert incoming calls.

broadband is o.k.

told by engineers no fault on the line.

have unplugged everything. taken front off main supply socket. then tried each phone in turn, plugging each into main supply socket. situation still the same.

any ideas? trying to avoid an expensive call-out. if there's no fault on the line what else can it be? thanks.

What type of phones are they?

Digital ones that connect via a base have ring volume settings.

Just found this.

 

Some models apparently have a Do Not Disturb function which prevents the phone from ringing... could it be that? :confused:

if you have taken the lower half off the master socket, and plugged your phones into the test socket inside, and they still dont ring, borrow a phone which is known to work and try that, if it doesnt work, you have a line fault.

Thanks Garbo. Have done all that - with the two phones in use and a third one that I know works - no luck with any of them. Just don't understand that the line has supposedly been checked and said to be o.k. Sure now that it's got to be that, so back to reporting it again - and hopefully, no bill!

Have you checked if you have 'Call Divert' activated on your line wrinkly67? Dial #21# from your phone and this will deactivate this feature if it has been applied to your line.

When they say the lines been checked, they just basically send a message to the exchange to ask if there's any known faults on your line (if it's been cutting out, not getting calls, if it's noisy etc) - if there's none reported, your broadband works fine, and calls work, then there's not much more they can do..

 

but if you have unplugged everything, and tried in the internal socket on the master (as you say you have) with a 3rd phone, then it's not your equipment and it's gotta be a line issue, there's nothing else it could be really.. (even if it's the socket, that's classed as part of the line, but only the 1st/Master socket is covered)

If you have a BT line you used to be able to dial 17070 and do a ring back test. When it says "clear down the line" put the phone down and it should ring you back straight away.
