Day to day supply cover in schools.

Recommended Posts

OK, fair point, but have you iphones, big TVs, go out for restaurant meals etc? ... all which could be sacrificed to pay your childcare. Maybe you don't and you're in a minority, but you get the gist. It's not a school's responsibility to look after your children when school is closed. That's plain wrong. Whilst I wouldn't deny anyone the right to have kids, you have to consider if you can afford to have them at the family planning stage.

Next, you'll be wanting school to be open till evening - to give them tea, supper, get them into their pj's so that they're not costing you.

Sorry if it annoys, but I have strong feelings on this subject

Sorry but are you at her window peering in? How can you presume people have stuff like this? There are a lot of families on minimum wage that need to work full time to make sure their kids have a good life.

You're being very judgey. There are after school clubs and breakfust clubs set up for working families to ensure their children are getting everything they need and it means families can work to provide for their family. When school is closed it's very hard to find a similar system without paying an arm and a leg.

Children aren't something you can plan year on year. Especially if life does as it does and changes, maybe you lose your job or become unable to work? Don't presume that people chose to neglect their children or not work just because a minority does.

no, not my style. I don't even know that the poster is a "she" - yet you seem to know, so maybe you are the one peering into "her" window.

for a time, I worked at a six form college. We got people asking for hardship assistance for various extra curricular activities. I don't remember one of these students being short of a smartphone. One even had a car that was newer than most of the staff, and no, she hadn't borrowed it, but it had been bought for her by her parents. So, while not everyone is like that, it is not unreasonable to think that some who plead that they need to work to make ends need, actually need to do extra work to sustain that consumerist lifestyle.

fine, and all respect to them. The problem arises when they try to pass that need onto the school and make it their problem by insisting that the school needs to take responsibility for out of hours baby sitting.

possibly.

No! After school clubs are there to enrich students' lives away from academia. To help them enjoy school, build friendships, get exercise, build self-esteem etc etc. Not for baby sitting duties while parents work.

True, I'll concede that one

It's amazing how many parents throw their children through the doors at 7.30 when the teachers are arriving so they can be fed and entertained over breakfast, enjoy a solid lunch and then engage in every after school activity going before being picked up (if they don't forget) in the early evening, to return home for a quick tea and bed (the tea sometimes doesn't get provided - placing that piece of ham between the bread can be a taxing business). That isn't just the low-income parents I'm referring to.

Schools shouldn't be free childcare services.

Haha!

Give us a link then.

Ps...I socialise with a couple of teachers and I do sympathise with a lot of what they tell me i.e. targets/bad kids, but not using the toilet? You're talking out of your arse.

My wife is a teacher and regularly has to miss her lunch because parents are late picking up their children, and she also regularly comes home having not had time to go to the toilet all day.

Yes it's almost unbelievable, but sadly it's also true.

The holiday lengths are a bit of a nightmare to cover with work. Our school is off, in total, for 14 weeks a year. Try covering that lot with two parents each getting 5 weeks holiday and no grandparents! :(

Didn't you think of that before you chose to have kids?

Or maybe schools full of kids with parents who thought about the consequences before having them?

Yeh!

Bit of a bummer, but 'hey-ho' that's life.

Do people actually sit down and work out if they can afford a child? Hmm.

My wife and I did. We worked out how many hours I could afford to drop down to and how much we'd could pay towards childcare.

The people who jump on the teacher-bashing bandwagon have one or both of the following chips on their shoulders-

1. Someone is getting a better deal than they are. Fair enough we all want more holidays and better wages

2. They have to make other arrangements when no-one else is looking after the kids that they chose to bring into this world.
