Blackbeard   10 #1 Posted October 2, 2015 "Chancellor George Osborne is set to sign a devolution deal with political leaders in Sheffield later, paving the way for an elected mayor in the city. The Sheffield City Region was one of 38 places to bid for increased control in how public money is spent in its area. The deal - part of the government's northern powerhouse programme - will require the support of local councils and be subject to public consultation." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-34414584 I thought we had voted against this in 2012? http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/elected-mayor-sheffield-rejects-plans-but-doncaster-says-yes-1-4518143
 Share this content via...

Proposals were put forward to do this without a mayor but were discounted.  Also Sheffield said no but Donnie said yes, and the new mayor would be for the combined authority of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield not just Sheffield. Now I'm all in favour of an elected mayor. I voted yes in 2012. However unlike the Labour party people who will be protesting against the tory government on Saturday I accept the will of the majority. Democracy has spoken and we as a city don't want one. the fonz   10 #5 Posted October 2, 2015 I was just about to post exactly that woodmally, so thank's for already saying it.  Its different, we voted no for a mayor in Sheffield, the mayor now covers the combined authority and sits on the board of the Sheffield City Region, both of which cover a much larger area than just Sheffield.  Its also important to point out that this time its part of a devolution deal and involves handing much of whitehalls power back to the city region as well as the funding. When they cut funding even more they can blame the Labour authority for the budget cuts.
 Share this content via...

When they cut funding even more they can blame the Labour authority for the budget cuts.  They must be pretty stupid then because its the Labour areas which are pushing for this deal to go through.  Its not just about amounts of funding, its about devolving powers to decide how to use the funding. Blackbeard   10 #10 Posted October 2, 2015 I don't claim to be good at hard sums but this seems to be the deal "The agreement means the Sheffield City Region will have access to a pot of government money - £30m a year over 30 years - enabling Sheffield to boost local growth and invest in local manufacturing and innovation." What can you get for £30 million and what will £30 million buy in 30 years time with inflation? The city budget is here if you want to do the sums. http://www.room151.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Sheffield-City-Council-Revenue-Budget-2015-16-11.pdf
 Share this content via...

the fonz   10 #12 Posted October 2, 2015 Imagine giving even more control to the local council...  HELP!  The devo deal gives funding to the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, which includes leaders from the areas public and private sectors so we don't have to worry about the council using the funding on pet projects asthe private sector which have a say.  ---------- Post added 02-10-2015 at 10:43 ----------  The rejected mayor vote was just for the city of Sheffield wasn't it? Sheffield City region as it is currently designated takes in a substantial chunk of the Midlands  http://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/about/overview/  That area extends all the way down to Ashbourne  The mayor will be for the Combined Authority and a chair on the city region board. The CA and the city region cover slightly different areas as the economic hinterland of Sheffield is different to the current governance structures in South Yorkshire.
