The kids are back in town!

Recommended Posts

Most of them are idiots IMO. Mollycoddled by their parents for 18 years and then unleashed on a city with no idea how to behave in the adult world.

Are you a student by chance? You seem very imature with your comment's.

A lot of students use the same gym as me, they are generally polite and courteous.

I don't know why some people have a problem with them - perhaps it's that old fashioned 'town and gown' split. Though to be honest I thought those old divisions didn't exist anymore.

I remember HH once saying on here that he studied an English Literature degree....I was surprised he said that to be honest.

Ok its a given that students bring money to the city, thats undisputed

But you would think someone who has moved to a city to love would at least try and make some attempt to integrate

Ask a student who has lived in Sheffield for two years if they know where some where like waterthorpe is or gleadless , they would look like you were from a different planet

To be fair when I first moved to Sheffield I didn't know where Waterthorpe or Gleadless were. Universities tend to concentrate housing and teaching centres in the S10 S11 areas, and conveniently for students lots of pubs are round that area.

It would be nice if both Universities moved their facilities to other areas, it might free up a bit of space in the s10 & s11 areas which are densely populated.

I've lived in this city most of my fifty plus years and I haven't visited every single area. Why would a student want or need to visit Waterthorpe or Gleadless for goodness sake ?

Well what if they got a job or interview in that direction

It's more just a case of having an awareness. .....

Both my husband and I came here as students, him 15 years ago and me 12 years ago. We both have worked full time continually since graduating, him in a locally owned business for the past 7. Married here, bought a house and in about 4 weeks will begin raising a son here. We are friends with all our neighbours, have a local where they know our drink, say hello to the postman and chat regularly to the shop owners nearby.

I must admit though I don't know where waterthorpe is! Pretty sure we are integrated though!

Not really. I wish I was 18 again but not to be a student in Sheffield in 2015. I'm glad my parents raised me to be a bit more self-reliant and self-aware than most of the students nowadays.

Should they know every street by name, too then?

I'm from Norwich. Lived there or thereabouts for 18 years and am back there 2-3 times a year for the last 12 years I've been in Sheffield. I could still go on Google Earth now and find a neighbourhood I've never heard of before, and Norwich isn't even very big.

Hang on...

- There you go. There's a 'Mount Pleasant' in Norwich. News to me.

Swardeston. Village/Suburb 2 miles south of town. Another one.

Chances are - like all human beings - a student's knowledge of the local area will develop from the places they live and work in, where they socialise, where people they know live, and the location of any other destinations they need (shops, doctors, etc.). Why would it be any other way, and what great benefit of knowing - with the greatest respect to Gleadless and Waterthorpe - where anywhere else is in any intimate detail?

Why do the students think they are often better then people they live around its the ignorance of that annoys me

How ironic.

I notice the posts above that one ^^ all accused students of doing things that locals also do, frequently.

As if somehow a world without students would have no drunks being sick on the street, no bad drivers, no people walking out in to the road, no neighbours who kept themselves to themselves, or no local people who didn't know where a suburb of Sheffield 5 miles from their own house was.
