schminke   10 #13 Posted September 23, 2015 Catchment areas can be quite odd shapes. I know High Storrs, Silverdale and King Ecgberts all take 'slices' of the city with catchments extending to Sharrow and Broomhall. I'd guess it'll be similar in other parts of the city. amazon123 Â Â 17 #14 Posted September 23, 2015 Question on this - we travel from the Crosspool area regularly, and on the 51, there are literally dozens of kids that I can only assume must go to Tapton or King Edwards, but they all seem to live in other areas of the city. Â How's that possible? Do catchments mean that little now? Â They are oddly-shaped. Children who attend Lowfield Primary, for instance, often attend King Ecgbert's in the south, whereas children in Meersbrook further south aren't eligible for King Ecgbert's until sixth form (I don't think), even though they're closer geographically. It all seems a bit random.
 Share this content via...

The Joker   10 #16 Posted September 24, 2015 Question on this - we travel from the Crosspool area regularly, and on the 51, there are literally dozens of kids that I can only assume must go to Tapton or King Edwards, but they all seem to live in other areas of the city.  How's that possible? Do catchments mean that little now?  Well, firstly, the catchment area for those schools include parts of Netherthorpe and Hillsborough.  Secondly, if any school places are still available after all applicant places from higher-priority children have been filled, then applications from out-of-catchment children will be allowed.  Thirdly (we're scraping the bottom of the barrel now) . . . there are those parents who provide a false or misleading application stating they live in the catchment area, when they do not.  And fourthly (now we're getting really desperate) there are out-of-catchment parents that drive their primary school children across the city to get into the feeder schools for their chosen secondary.  And fifthly (at which point we've reached rock bottom) you can lie your way through a school placement appeal using a combination of any of the above.
