Alan Woodward SUFC-RIP

Recommended Posts

Those were the days !

Woody turning up, and scoring on the left wing there.

In one of the other film clips, I believe that Kevin Keegan's (another South Yorkshire lad) goal was on his debut for Liverpool v Leicester City.

RIP Woody, an absolute legend and a local lad, one of the best players ever to play for Sheffield United.

1947 seems a bit early as Alan was born in 1946 (making Blades 1st Division debut in 1964). I believe in the mid-60's he lived in the Wharncliffe Side/Deepcar area and was a Chapletown lad.

He lived on the "Ideal Homes" estate in Deepcar on Webb Avenue from the late 60's to mid 70's.

Only player I've seen who could take an inswinging corner from the right wing with his right foot. Great striker of a ball.

RIP.

Best dead ball specialist of his time , matched Peter Lorimer as having the hardest shot in

football ,more skilful though, always entertained in derby games.

Many years ago I was in the old Royal Hospital waiting room and sat next to me was a then United player. We got chatting about hardest shots, yes at that time Peter Lorimer and Manchester United's David Herd and Bobby Charlton would be among them, but he told me the hardest shot at the Lane wasn't Mssrs Woodward and Currie-who both could hit 'em- but Geoff Salmons! Anyway Alan R.I.P.

Just going from the main point re the Royal hospital waiting room I always seem to be sat in there as a kid with mum for one thing or another.

So very sad.

A fixture on the wing, great dead ball expert, shot like a bullet.

One of the best.

RIP Woody.

Hope I wasn't sat in your seat!

Also and as a lifelong Wednesdayite the eras of 'Sheffield Football Folklore' if I may term it as such, with the likes of Alan Woodward, Tony Currie, Len Badger, Mick Jones, John Fantham, Tony Kay David Layne-I could go on-_we will never see the likes of again, after a couple of years they just bugger off.* ('bugger off'* a term my Pitsmoor born dad used when I requested money)

During that era Woodward, TC and Geoff Salmons looked unstoppable in full flight. I remember Woody also scoring direct from a corner in a League Cup night match against Newcastle at the Lane. I was stood at the back of the kop when it flew in.

That era of Reece, Badger, Hemsley, Colquhoun, Dearden, Hockey was superb.

I always thought Woody came from Penistone and played with Barnsley Boys can anyone help on that one ?

Quite moving to see the tributes paid by Wednesday fans on this thread, it shows what a decent lot you are.

Another link with my childhood gone

RIP Woody
