Tree devastation in Sheffield

yes but they re really changing the neighbourhoods which were once very leafy and beautiful , they are killing healthy trees , which give us good air and take in our carbon monoxide, they are doing this all over sheffield which is very sad and what a waste of resources !!

 

Trees don't give out 'good air', they produce oxygen, just one element that makes up 20% of the air.

 

They don't take in carbon monoxide either, it's carbon dioxide.

 

I thought everyone learned this stuff at school?

of course amey are going to cut down those trees if they are possibly going to damage the roads and cost amey money, they are a profit driven company after all.

You are partly correct dangerousdd. Amey is indeed maximum profit, minimum effort. And I feel that both Sheffield City Council and Amey are being very dishonest with us about this. The devastation to Sheffield's trees is not only unprecedented, it is completely astonishing how aggressive their campaigns have been. Two week notice period and then felling, as if this is a sufficient consultation process with local people. Disgusting.

I like trees a lot, but in some of the streets of Sheffield the trees have become hugely overgrown and I wouldn't want to live on one of those streets. I'm thinking of some of the streets of Nether Edge where the trees totally outscale their kerbside location and make the street extremely dark and gloomy.

 

Sheldon Road and the bottom of Carterknowle Road spring to mind. If you look at the old pictures of these streets with the trees half the size they're much more pleasant, so I have no objection to the replacement of overgrown trees.

 

Last time I was down the bottom end of Carterknowle Road some of the huge trees had been replaced and it was sensitively done. The street was opened up and much lighter. I approve.

 

What I really hate is the current fashion for insensitive private tree surgery where a nice old free standing tree is insensitively butchered and cut right back with truncated branches. It's so ugly and unecessary.

I think that is called pollarding and has been done for thousands of years

And I would hazard a guess that Ms Jay doesn't have an old and diseased tree outside her property whose roots are causing major problems to it.

Cutting a few trees down that are doing so can hardly be called 'devastation'.

Using such words as 'devastation', 'horrendous' and 'murder' are usually associated with war zones and other areas of disaster - not tree felling !

 

No probably not !!healthy trees are being taken ! In a war zone trees do look like how these have been left ! We used to have trees outside our home but they were cut down in there prime for being old ! If they have made the pavement raised them sort it out ! Not take the trees , which are environmentally giving us protection . In Bulawayo every street has jacaranda trees on and other trees this provide a haven for wildlife , birds , bugs which are micro systems all providing us with a healthier living !

I have several friends who are tree surgeons they will tell you they are taking healthy trees !

I have several friends in Netheredge who chose this area for its leafy looks they are feeling quite bereft that they are being removed ! And in one case they are selling up and moving because of it

You were right the first time... They do indeed remove carbon monoxide along with nitrous oxide and sulphide.... All round good boys... Of course the thing they do most is photosynthesise with carbon dioxide but they do so much more.....

I know what pollarding is and it's not that I'm thinking of.

They are cutting down a lot of trees up in Gleadless and I too was sad that it was just at blossoming time. However, they have only taken a selection and are beginning to replace them (a sapling is just as good in my view, better than no tree!). Also the pavements where they are removing them from are horrendous, and my children regularly trip on their way to school, not to mention how the elderly manage, so I can see the reasons for doing it. The trees are being replaced, so I really don't see the reason for such uproar. It's not like they're going into the woods and chopping trees down for the sake of it. I love the trees in Sheffield as much as anyone else, but if they are becoming problematic then I am all for sorting things out in the long term.

As is everyone. But lazy commercialism is not the way. Pavement issues can easily be remedied with a number of alternatives - felling is not necessary. The problem is outsourcing to a private company that cares only about money and the wrong people are in charge of Sheffield's trees now - and the next few years will be very dark times for our favourite trees. It's really very sad indeed
