Even the recent Star article on Crosspool picks up on how a decent drinking pub is the only thing the area is really lacking: http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/old-fashioned-in-a-neighbourly-way-1-8320744

Also:

Following our announcement yesterday that Sainsbury's application for change of use had been refused by the Planning Committee, a few people have asked what comes next. There are a number of options:

1. Sainsbury's may appeal the decision - although we hope that as a responsible company they will respect the wishes of the local community and the decision made by the local authority

2. Enterprise Inns may leave the building empty and boarded up - however, we have already discussed with councillors the option of a compulsory purchase if the building is left in a state of disrepair

3. Enterprise could reopen the pub as a 'managed house' - although we doubt they would want to spend in excess of £100,000 to bring the buildng back into use

4. Enterprise could put the pub on the market - this would trigger a six month period during which the option of a community buy-out could be considered. Alternatively, another brewery or pub operator could come foward and buy the pub to run it is a going concern. We are aware that a number of local breweries/pub companies have expressed an interest in taking on the Plough.

We will keep people updated as and when there are any new developments

I'm chuffed that those people stopped the plough being a Sainsbury's but let's face it - the community didn't exactly rally round that pub when it was open.

There are open pubs round there now that are quiet - I've just been in one with half a dozen people in.

Use them or lose them.

Unless someone comes in with a lot of money and does a 'rising sun' or 'ranmoor' then I think it's foolhardy to stop sainsburys. The building could be magnet for all sorts of vandalism, theft and everything that goes with it.

Thornbridge have been mentioned as have other breweries but there have been a number of new beginnings to the plough over the years none of which got the numbers up.

I wonder if it would be a perfect opportunity for Sainsburys to pilot a new concept - the 'Sainsburys Taste the Difference pub'.

They could source almost all the food, drink and other supplies at cost price via Sainsburys warehouse then form a relationship with some local breweries for draft products. The full food and drink offer could be focuses on fresh and quality at an affordable price.

Sainsburys would also have the resource to market the place properly.

Of course that suggestion wasn't entirely serious, but it is proved elsewhere that if the management get the offer in terms of environment, food and drink offering, service etc and promote it properly - coupled with reasonable overheads - it can be a success. Unfortunately there are also plenty of examples where a lease from Enterprise Inns or other similar pub companies can restrict the ability to do that..

They've got to be good though.

Look at how all the crap pubs on Walkley High Street closed. But then the Blake open as a good pub has been thriving, and now there's the new Micropub too

You don't keep going to a crap pub out of loyalty. People vote with their feet. But build it and they will come!

I do hope the offer of some proper funding does make The Plough re-opening a genuinely workable idea.

With the imminent (and much needed) refurb/rebadge /upgrade of the hovel that is the Crosspool Tavern, the area may once again have a choice of pubs to visit :)

I attended a community meeting, it's now a serious proposition, everybody's support and enthusiasm to make it work is very welcome. Here's some info:

THE PLOUGH COMMUNITY BENEFIT SOCIETY LTD

LATEST NEWS

1. Public Meeting – we had a really successful public meeting on June 15th attended by over 70 local people. We presented information on the business plan, on what community activities we’d like to see as part of how the Plough develops and how we will showcase the sporting history of the area. People asked a lot of informed questions and there was a lively discussion of some issues but overwhelming support for the idea of reopening the Plough as community pub.

2. Volunteer Support – at the public meeting we received many offers of help from people with specialist skills and experience or from people who just want to help at a practical level. If you would like to actively contribute to the development of the project, please contact us.

3. Investing in your local pub – if you choose to make an investment, you will become a member of the Plough Community Benefit Society, you will have a vote on how the Society operates and its decision-making. All members have one vote, irrespective of the value of their shareholding. A modest dividend will be payable on all shares, depending on the performance of the business.

3. Pledges – we have distributed Pledge Letters throughout the area and some people have already returned these. In just the second week of our appeal, we have received pledges to the value of £30,000. If you have received a Pledge Letter, we would encourage you to return them as soon as you can. If you have not received one, please contact us.

4. Corporate Members – if you are a local business, you can invest as a business and appoint a named representative as a Member. If you are a local community group or sports club, you can join as a group or club and appoint a representative as a Member.

5. Crosspool Street Market – the annual Crosspool Street Market takes place on Sunday, June 25th and we will have a stall there. The market opens at 1 p.m. and runs throughout the afternoon.

6. Marketing – we are actively promoting our project through social media but we have also been out and about in Crosspool talking to people face to face. The next step is to widen our appeal through a crowd funding platform and to target potential corporate investors. We are also asking all of you to market the project, please pass on information to family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. Again, if anyone has skills in social media or marketing, we’d love to hear from you.

Not sure how it can be classed as an eyesore?
