RootsBooster   24 #265 Posted October 5, 2015 That is very true. By nature they are a bit childish and immature.  I would say that applies more to the British that go over there and pretend to be American.
 Share this content via...

They're far slower and easier to hit than a running hare or a bird in flight. More resistant though, for sure...but poor shooters can just pump them full of lead
 Share this content via...

Harleyman   12 #269 Posted October 5, 2015 Plain to see. You're all mad with jealousy since the only thing the law in the UK allows you to shoot at is empty beer cans with a BB gun.  Carry on suckers. We do have our problems here but it' s not so scary as being overrun by a few million refugees. Better start learning Arabic
 Share this content via...

L00b   441 #271 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Not compared to a rabbit or a ratThe problem with boars is not their speed, it's their mass and anatomy. You need a big calibre for stopping power, because shooting is frequently close-ish quarters (i.e. sub-70 meters and well under that, due to their preferred habitats) and they're relentless if they fight (charge) rather than flee, not because they're fast (...because they're not).  But since there's just about no boars in the UK, and precious little other game of a size that warrants the sort of rifles and calibres routinely associated with boar hunting (12 for slugs and 7x57 or 8x57 mauser), it's a fairly redundant aside in this thread and debate.  Laws regarding gun ownership in the UK are already tighter than an nun's...mindset, so the answer to the thread title is, at least insofar as the UK is concerned, "you'd have a bit of a job".  In the US however...dispassionately and objectively, from afar, the practical application of gun laws (application and vetting procedure, cumulative ownership, with regional variations à la conceal and carry on top) looks very inconsistent, so much so that the whole place very much looks like a free-for-all when all is said and done. I'm really struggling to see how the 2nd amendment would be breached or even marginally eroded by outlawing full- and semi-auto assault rifles and machine pistols. Other than the military, and a few specialist marksmen/assault sections of law enforcement, who needs these, even for target practice? sgtkate   10 #272 Posted October 5, 2015 Harley can you explain why in the US you can buy an assault rifle more easily than you can have an abortion?
 Share this content via...

Largest calibre fir hunting is a .308  Largest calibre for target shooting is a .50bmg  Go on tell ne how you use a .577 tyrannosaur fir raccoons then so we can laugh at you so more
 Share this content via...

L00b   441 #276 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) Is 9.3 x 62 the calibre they use for boars on the continent? Not to my knowledge. Most typical around our parts (north east France, west Germany, Ardennes) would be 8x57 JRS, frequently as not combined with a 12 bore as a 'mixed' rifle (over-under). Brenneke slug to shock-stop it (if it's running or charging), bullet to kill it. With apologies to sensible souls reading.  7x57 is less frequent, being a lighter and faster bullet option. Never seen a 9.3x62 in the wild, though seen a few for sale in Belgium (maybe repatriated from Congo and such ex-African colonies...that calibre is more synonymous with larger game found in Africa, than boar or deer).  Such rifles fall fully under the UK's FAC caboodle, because they have a rifled barrel, unlike shotguns (and the 12 bore barrel in mixed ones). They are beyond a PITA to get a FAC for in the UK, and the game is far too expensive to shoot for most over here. Neighbour has a FAC for one (I signed his forms) but he's only ever used it once on an invite AFAIK.  By comparison, it's just about free in north east France, hence popular.
