Darnall Tip 1960s

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where Darnall tip was. Seen a photo in the Star of the tip at the end of a dead end road.

Hi pressy, There was no Darnall tip. The picture is either Gladstone Street, Unwin Street or Beighton Street, all of which ran off Main Road leading to Handsworth Hill. The scrap belonged to Walker Wright Company which was piled up on a piece of ground running alongside the railway line.

There was a Darnall tip, which was directly behind Whitby Road School. It ran from the new Fire Station area upto Balfour Road. Presumably slag from the Darnall Mine. The locals would gather to play football on it, but as I can testify it was very hazardous underfoot.

I cannot remember the name of the dead- end street but it certainly existed.
