Lobos, just had a trawl and realised I'd forgot how many body styles there were, what year was yours. Btw, my dad had one of the old FB Victors when I was a kid. Before that he had a Standard Vanguard but I was too young to remember it. Medusa, I was only having having a laugh with a mate the other day about those bloody vinyl seats, dad needed a cattle prod to get us in the car when the numpty had left it parked in the sun, lol.

1966 model vx I can still remember the reg no it was MAW 344D.

I had a gleaming red dolomite sprint which I loved. Like most 70s cars it wasn't the most reliable but I can still hear that 'growl' to this day.

I remember all of our family's car registration numbers from being a small child (even my aunt and uncle's cars and my dad's company cars that changed every 9 weeks) but I can't tell anybody what they are as they are my secret bank of passwords that I won't forget!

(My OH calls me Raingirl due to my ability with phone numbers from 30 years ago, car registrations and randomly generated strings of letters for passwords BTW- I know about this and I know it's just a little bit aberrant :) )

My first "car", in around 76/77 was a 1969 A35 van. (For the younger ones amongst you who don't know what that is, think Wallace and Grommit's van). However, they'd stopped making the A35 van a couple of years before mine was registered.

It appeared that the original owner had bought a bodyshell and then sourced a variety of components from the MOWOG parts bin and various scrap yards. As a result it had a non-standard engine size - (I think it was 998 instead of 1098, but it's a few years ago so I'm not sure. I don't know what car it actually came from originally).

Also, it appeared to have a very non-standard gearbox and/or back axle ratio. As a result, it was VERY low geared. It had a true top speed of around 45 mph, at which point it was revving its nuts off, and the speedo was reading in the high sixties. Presumably the speedo drive was to suit a different gearbox. I finished up calibrating the gearbox as best I could by taking it on the motorway and timing the run between mile posts.

The electrics were very poor, and barely able to keep the battery charged. But that didn't matter as it had a starting handle.

Hi Eater Sundae.

Your account of your experience with the A35 van simply vindicates my 1962 decision to decline the offer of an A35 saloon as my first car. On looking at the car I found it to be really small and particularly narrow.

Instead I opted for a 1952 A40 Somerset which was slow and cumbersome but it was more spacious. It gave sterling service all through that atrocious winter until after an altercation with a coal lorry in snowy conditions it met its end.

echo.

(My OH calls me Raingirl due to my ability with phone numbers from 30 years ago, car registrations and randomly generated strings of letters for passwords BTW- I know about this and I know it's just a little bit aberrant :) )

I remember the registrations of the two comma caravettes my father owned between 1974/7. The 1964(?) blue high- top with Luton was HNU477C.

We called it "H'nuc" like nanuk of the north, as it did some legendary mileage.

The other was a low-top, which was a little younger, an H reg. PAK 433H, which we nicknamed pack-horse. ( because of the registration).

I remember quite a few of the cars he had from 1966, but not the reg numbers,

We had a 1934 British racing-green Morgan 6, a 2 seater which we called Genevieve. I remember it because of the row it caused between my dad and mum, as mum was 6 or 7 months pregnant with my younger sister, as well as me, a 2 1\2 year old, which made the fact that it was a 2 seater rather problematical.

I cant remember what it was replaced by.

We had a motorbike, then a bike-and-side car combo, then i remember a ford zodiac, and either a zephyr 4 or a zephyr 6, which we traded for a red and white Bedford caravette in 1973. I remember a 1950s hillman minx, then "H'nuc"and pack horse.

There was a yamaha motorbike, and then the 1979 plate two-stroke MZ 250 ts-1 which was DET457V.

After that two ford escorts, a mark 1 and a mark 2, which ended up rotting on my brother in laws drive.

We then had a mini clubman, with the square front.

Then there was a dreadful reliant robin which used to terrify me, as it wobbled terribly in the slightest wind.

By this time, i was with the ex hub, we had a reregistered ( i think it was a re-import) 1970 ford escort estate, which had a 1979 plate, then a british racing green Austin Maxi.

(And, medusa, i can remember my aunt and uncle's phone number from 40 years ago, "Darton 4291". )
