Didn't want to resurrect one of the old posts in General, so posting this here. Anybody here play online poker? I recently decided to try my hand and still suck pretty bad but at least I now know the different hands :hihi:

I'm not playing for real money, as I would be taken to the cleaners within minutes, but I am trying to learn so that I will be confident to do some low-stake stuff online in the future. Main exception is my brother, who is what I suppose could be called semi-pro (he has a bankroll of around 100,000$ that is steadily going up each year), plays online for fun with other family members and some friends on a Thursday night, I've been invited to join them, and at 5 Euro buy-in and 5c/10c) it isn't too mad, but I tried it and lost it all on the third hand (despite having a flush!).

I am just wondering what the best way to improve my play is, I am reading about it and watching it live on streams when I have some time, anything else I can do to improve?

I tried to play when I was a student but I never got good. Losing hurt me too much, and I learnt thus that I wasn't a very good gambler. I once won a tournament and bought a new pump for the fish tank - I was a real high roller.

Low stakes poker however, it's not proper gambling. People make stupid bets on long odds hands just because the most they stand to lose is a few pound. All-in on a 3 and 4 of spades. It's just weird. Even more true with play-money.

I quit years ago. I'd have to look the hands up now, it's been that long.

This is something my brother says a lot as well, he doesn't like playing with the group we play with all that much, the only reason he does is so he can chat to everybody whilst doing something he likes.

It must be frustrating because poker is luck AND skill, and if you have enough luck the skill side doesn't matter. If I have enough cash and feel I am becoming good enough, I'll join him on a buy-in tournament in Germany in a few years.

Stay away and invest in your brother if he's as lucky and skilled as you say.

I used to love playing the freeroll tourneys on Betfair(which have now stopped:suspect:),and I regularly got to the final table with a few pence payout each time.(not much I know, but I played for fun anyway :D).

After a while I thought "I'm getting good at this",so decided to put some money in,and join some real tourneys .

I don't know if it was the Freeroll hands that were made easier,or the cash tourney hands harder (or a mixture of both),but there was a definite difference between the two,I literally couldn't get any half decent hand on the cash tourney.

I could imagine that the freerolls are purposely easier to gain money from muppets like myself, but the difference was so ludicrously obvious, that I wont be trying that again lol.

Its all good if you know the people your playing, but if your a newbie to it,your always gonna be shark bait really lol:P

I was a play money millionaire on party poker once started with a 2k stack!, and then they "pruned" my stack to 100k or so. eventually I lost my log in details and stopped playing.

I recently started on poker stars play money, am up from 1k to 40k already. it is quite an annoying site as I regularly get a killer hand, go all in and lose to an almost impossibly better hand.

remember, real money sites are there to make profits and you will often lose real money to a robot player that is adding your cash to the site's coffers. people can win on these sites but expect a lot of heartache. stick to the play money or join a pub poker league with or without stakes required. I started with no cash free entry, playing in the Live Pub Poker League (LPPL) and had great fun learning the game. I then moved on to red tooth poker which in most pubs is just £5 in the pot at the start of the night, thus not much to lose. worth a try. it is often on tv on showcase channel on freesat where I sometimes watch.

as they say....

...may all your hands be live and your pots be monsters!

My best advice to anyone considering gambling online.

There are far better things to waste your money on than helping to fill the pockets of the people that could afford to set up an online gambling site to fleece the gullible.

I have played online poker for many years on many sites and I do ok, when you are comfortable with your game you could try Redtooth poker at your local pub, go online to find if and what nights they play. I play twice a week at the pub and its a laugh with all abilities there, you can put a fiver in or just play for league points.

They are 13 week leagues you can play any combination of weeks you wish, 4 from each pub go to regional final at G casino Sheffield where the winner gets a Las Vegas package, top 8 get cash and go to national final usually at DTD Nottingham where another Las Vegas package can be won.

Some pubs also supply complimentary food but not all.

Look at my S12 POKER facebook group for a bit more general info.

Didn't realise it was legal to play for cash in pubs here, that sounds like fun and a good way to build up some knowledge of the game without too much stress and hassle.

@Tommo - only play with what you are prepared to lose is the primary rule.
