Thats lovely. Tell me though. If the council gave a stuff about air pollution then why are they installing more and more traffic lights, bus lanes and then messing around with existing traffic lights to make them stay red longer? All these things massively increase pollution yet the council carry on regardless.

That would be to deal with the fact that there are too many vehicles wanting to use the roads at the same time.

By the way, bus lanes don't make any difference to journey times for normal traffic, they just let the bus get to the front of any queue.

What makes you think traffic lights stay red longer? When they are red one one approach, they are usually green on another.

Both have pros and cons, modern diesels with particulate filters are very clean, they just have the added cost of the filter needing changing frequently. No matter what car you drive, it will be polluting, smaller engines are probably the way forward but another big factor is the weight of cars, whilst making engines smaller and more efficient/powerful car makers have been increasing the weight on cars for ages due to safety reasons, there is a lot to be gained by making cars lighter.

That is true, because of all the extra safety equipment and things such as side impact bars in the doors modern cars are very heavy. The old 70,s and 80,s cars i used to own were just as quick but had a lot less power.I had a mk2 ford escort with a 2 litre engine which only had about a 100 bhp but it was still a very quick car because it did not weigh a lot.My chances of surviving a high speed crash in it though would have been a lot less than the car i now drive though.

They are but this is on top for diesel vehicles, not all of them just most of them.

/if diesel is so bad then it should be banned and to hell with the cost. Why must it always result in charges or rather taxs? Smokings bad so they tax it more, booze is bad so tax it more, diesel is bad so tax the drivers more. Its so transparent its almost funny. If these things are so damn bad then ban them for all our sakes.

I think you have answered it yourself,no government will ever ban them while they are bringing in so much revenue through taxes.Electric and low emission cars are tax free but if we all went out tomorrow and swapped to these cars they would not stay tax free for very long.

Just my two-pennorth - I thought these matrix signs were designed and installed for warning/information purposes, NOT for propaganda. And I'm not a driver.

And of course one has to ask;

how much energy do these matrix boards use?

on whose behalf was the message generated?

how much does it cost who to install and run these things?

.

.

That is what they are used for, but it is allowable for them to be used for public information messages when not needed for their primary purpose.

The signs use LED's so they use very little power.

The messages are part of the Council's Air Aware campaign.

The signs were bought a few years ago with an EU grant as part of the South Yorkshire Intelligent Transport System project.

The scary part of this is that Sheffield City Council are employing somebody to upload these spurious messages at the ratepayers expense. The Government ought to adopt the Rotherham Policy, sack the present council and bring in responsible people from London who are accountable to the citizens of Sheffield.

Spurious?

And of course they have to employ someone specifically for this duty. It's not just another duty of an existing member of staff.

There's a electronic road sign on St Mary's Gate which reads 'Drive Petrol not Diesel' Maybe I've missed something so does anyone know exactly what this is referring to?

I know what you mean about the state of the roads. If only the council were proactive and awarded a multi billion pound contract to a private company to resurface and maintain every road in Sheffield!

Hang on a mo. :suspect:

That was needed 30 years ago. SCC get bog all credit for finally doing it now.
