davebrmm   10 #25 Posted April 23, 2015 there are good sections & bad sections all along the course of the river to be honest years ago I used to be a member at tin mill, which allowed me to fish their stretch of river for grayling, but since the floods in 2007 I haven't been back that said I have been thinking about rejoining, as there are a lot of good chub & barbel in their section & some real crabtree-like swims  I now fish it at beeley woods & up to oughtibridge throughout the winter - in fact I don't do much Stillwater fishing at all through the colder months, much prefer grayling & chub fishing when it's cold  In previous years I've also fished at the back of owlerton, although access these days is not great, and neepsend (club mill road used to be excellent where the river Loxley joins the don) but again, access is now restricted here (or it was last autumn when I went for a look)  other than that, the salmon pastures stretch looks very nice & is easily accessible, went for a look last year & there were a few people fishing down there so I would guess there are lots of fish around  regarding taking fish, there are restrictions on the numbers & sizes of fish you're allowed to remove & these are different for each individual species. I would echo Mr Hinks' statement, yes you're allowed to take them (provided they are above the legal size) but there are some anglers who don't like you doing that, they probably wouldn't care too much about the odd trout (I personally wouldn't do it myself, but then I'm not a fish lover, but I certainly wouldn't try to tell someone else not to take them), but if anyone starts to think about removing chub or barbel - I would imagine there would be some problems... 70yrs ago I lived in Hobson Ave near hillfoot bridge the don was at the top of our street the only thing we caught was dead dogs ,turds and polio
 Share this content via...

dars35   10 #27 Posted April 24, 2015 I recall a story in the Sheffield Star from my youth (early 80's I think) where someone had caught a pike from one of the windows at their place of work overlooking the don  the amazing thing was - not that the fella had been fishing from a window - but that anything was actually alive in the don! Croftonblade   10 #29 Posted May 4, 2015 Fancied an hours fly fishing to calm me down after the Blades match yesterday- chocolate brown and level up. Ah well, another day!  ---------- Post added 08-05-2015 at 00:15 ----------  Had a couple of hours fly fishing on the Don before tonight's Blades match. 2 trout on nymph and 5 on dry fly. There was a spell of about 20 minutes when they were taking small white flies off the top- thats when O caught- then nothing at all risimg even tho the same white flies were still everywhere. ad_foster   10 #32 Posted April 16, 2017 Hi im thinking about going fishing on the Don tomorrow morning for a few hours, last time i went was after the great flood of 2007 (5 wiers walk on attercliffe)  Fancy catching a few grayling, trout maybe even some chub.  Can any recommend some good parts of the don?  Cheers Confusing. I understood it that using a lure you could fish at any time and it was only live bait during closed season that was a no no (obvs talking "rod and line" here). Does anyone have a clear ruling on this, I'd like to do a little lure fishing down oughtibridge way over the next few days?
 Share this content via...
charliewag   17 #33 Posted April 16, 2017 You're ok to fish artificial lure/fly during the coarse close season on the Don. Worm is the only bait allowed during this period.
 Share this content via...
