I'm not a fisherman, but do cycle up and down the 5 Weirs Walk regular.

Both sides of Stevenson Road seem to be popular !

You can't fish for trout until 25th March! That's when the trout season starts.

Not till 25th you can't alf. I rang EA hotline today as someone was fishing. They were sending someone down to catch him. There's no fishing on rivers from march 15th to 24th inclusive.

That must be a new ruling as this is what it states on the .gov web site

Game fishing during the coarse fish close season

You can fish for salmon, trout and other game fish during the coarse fish close season. You have to use certain types of lures and baits in some areas however.

Midlands, Yorkshire, and the north-east and north-west of England

You can only use natural or artificial fly, minnow, worm, shrimp, prawn, sand eel or artificial lures during close season.

many years ago they used to stock damflask with trout, to allow anglers to fish it through the coarse closed season, to maintain year-round income

although I can't recall the actual laws regarding dates, I do seem to recall that used to start on 25th March, suggesting that was the law - otherwise they'd have just allowed people to fish through from the end of the coarse season...

this is going back to the mid 1980's

Check your dates Croftonblade - this is what your link says

Coarse fish close season

It is unlawful to fish for coarse fish from 15

March to 15 June inclusive on any river,

stream, drain or waterway (other than

canals). With the exception of the Aire and

Calder Navigation between Castleford and

Ferrybridge Lock there is no statutory close

season on any canals, reservoirs, lakes or

ponds for coarse fish in the North East

Region. However, individual owners may

close their fisheries if they wish. Always

check before you fish.

unlawful to fish for coarse fish, yes - not trout

so if you fish a river that holds trout & you're using baits & methods that adhere to local bylaws, then you have as much right to be fishing the river as you would be in the coarse season, provided you wait until the trout season begins

can't imagine trout in ecclesfield pond! doesn't have the right 'feel' for them!

I also recall most of the rainbows they used to stock got caught & removed within the first 2 or 3 weeks, but people were still allowed to fish for them!
