crookedspire Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I recently brought a landscape painting its not a copy as you can see the bush strokes and its done in watercolours. The picture is not in a frame as such but on a canvas frame on the back there is some Italian writing but I don't understand Italian so can't tell you what it says. On the bottom left side the painting is signed 'Francia Pia' . The painting could be done by a unknown artists Iv googled the name but only found a passing comment just wounded if anyone out their might have heard or know anything about Francia Pia?
Dyke Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Hi .. I have done quite abit of research too and she is nowhere at all on the internet. Do you have an idea of how old the painting is ?
crookedspire Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 I brought this painting out of a charity shop at Clay Cross. No idea of its age but clearly a few years old but in reasonable shape. On the back its says in Italian: Questa tela e stata esposta nel palazzo della provincia in asti dal giorno ral.

crookedspire Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Is this artist work rare and possibly worth a bit ?
Blackbeard Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 in the 70's a friend of mine had a sideline going door to door selling paintings. He bought them very cheap and told me they were from the far east and were made to look like they were old and valuable. I am not saying that it was one of Steve's but just be very wary that he and others had been selling "interesting" paintings.

Pia is a city in the south of France. "Francia" an old name for France from the Frankish Empire, also Italian for France. As it's a landscape could it be a painting of the city of Pia? And not the artists name?
crookedspire Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 The picture is of a mountain scene complete with river following in the middle and signed Francia Pia on the back is a label in Italian.
wrinkly67 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 No art knowledge whatsoever!! but your painting is intriguing me! do still feel that this is a landscape of Pia in France - in the Pyrenees, which explains the mountains - rather than it being the artists name. There is a Palazzo della Provincia in San Francesco, Italy. And the Italian on the back of the painting roughly translated would seem to say that this painting was exhibited there and "in asti dal giorno ral" on auction day. How did it get to Clay Cross?? Would suggest you go to an Antiques Roadshow - there's one at Bolsover Castle on 9th July. Fingers crossed you make your fortune.
